April/May and Oct/Nov are the best time to go to Maui for consistent winds and big surf.
Dec/Jan has big surf but much less wind and Jun/Jul is generally flat with killer winds!
I arrived in Maui in the beginning of July and was maxed out on my 3.5 in virtually no surf. The winds eased back gradually and I did get some great wave sailing during the next couple of months, but the best was at the end of September with over mast high surf in 5.3 winds. Unfortunately I had to leave just when things starting firing... I did get a couple of awesome days in though.
In 3 months on Maui, I sailed all but 2 days... could have sailed them too.
Its an awesome place, but next time I'll be going around April/May or Oct/Nov.

have done maui in april/may four times and good each time with the last 2 years being exceptional for both wind and swell. there is a reason all the photo shoots are done then.

The swell would be bigger at that time of the year.

Any good recommendations for accomodations and car hire, for a single lad that wants to get the most out my $$. As far as kit for April/May will a 85 L and 4.7/5.2/5.8 cover the conditions or will I need something smaller, I'm 90 kg.

Any info would be great, thinking of 3 weeks of surf and wind.

Cheers,

Your in for some fun i have been the last 2 years in mid april to may for about 4 weeks. Both times i have got wind and waves and have sailed all but 2 or 3 days in 4 weeks. I stayed at sprecks plantation house really nice place booked it with windsufari not the cheapest option but suited me no hassle as soon as you get to maui the car, accom is all sorted any dramas you can ring them and they sort it out for you. I took my own gear i took 69ltr 4.0 4.5 4.7 5.0 one mast and boom if you fly qantas they will normally check you all the way to maui for nothing and on your way back the inter island leg will cost you about $100 or fly hawaiian and they will tell you exactly what it will cost for each leg before you leave i think it was about $160 each way something like that but i reckon its well worth taken your own if your staying for longer than 2 weeks
