Driving from Melbourne to Brisbaine in two weeks then flying to Cairns for three days. Researched a bit and the Westerly's look like pooo :)

Bringing one kite. Either a 9 or 12 just in case I get lucky. 175 lbs / 78 kgs? Which do you guys recommend? Here in Fl. during the winter I can get by with a 9 just because it's blowing 17+ or not doing much at all.

4/3 or 3/2 wettie? Figured I'd need the 4/3 in Mel, but once in Syd. and North probably not?

Cheers

12m about the average sized kite everyone uses up around goldcoast / bris area. wind is hit and miss during winter, and is often all or nothing, with the occasional gem of a day, but you got to be in right place at right time, and ready to drop everything at short notice. big westerlies are good, but probably suited better for windsurfing as they can be pretty full on with big gusts - 1.5 to 3 ml steamer best imo, but some folk do it without anything

cairns in winter is tops, warm solid wind from SE, and again i think about 9 - 12 m kites is typical? go in the nude

if all else fails, try the kite forum

Hi Jeff, I don't kite but I think the 12 would be the go here on the coast most of the time. Coastal the wind is normally 12 to 20 here this time of year but can and does go 25+ although it's unusually crap atm. No need for a wetsuit so you'll look normal just in boardies, leave the nude teabagging to your girlfriend unless she's fat. Locals are friendly but don't take my parking spot & learn to self launch & land. If no transport go to Port Douglas as you can stay close to the beach. The main area for kites in Cairns is Yorkeys, a 15min or so drive away, say hi to the worn out old fella windsurfing.

It's generally a lot windier at Green Island, but don't go if you're not flash, small island big ocean

Cheers Bob.
