A full report of the racing and a video will follow soon. A total of 117 races, 26 each, were held over 4 days in 20-35 knot conditions. Dunedin Windsurfing Club put on yet another big event with the help of major sponsor DriPhone. NoR for 2013 will be out shortly. Hope a few more from across the ditch can make it over next year.

Well done Chris, Gareth, Isaac and all the NZ crew. (mate how much superglue did that foot need this time)

I can seriously recommend this comp for anyone interested in getting plenty of well organized slalom racing and seeing a bit of the Sth Island at the same time.

The crew in Dunedin are a bit slalom crazy and go all out to put on an awesome event with a perfect course, plenty of rounds in quick succession so you don't spend anytime waiting on the beach and the kiwi hospitality is amazing.

Nice footage! And well cut.

What's the specs on the slalom races - re: Board type, sail sizes etc? It's nice to see windsurfing races that aren't like dinghy sailing races :)

Pretty sure Chris only took a 6.2 and 7.8, not sure about boards but maybe only took the one board about 69 wide. Not bad considering the locals would have had their whole quiver at their disposal. Onya maaaaaaate!

A very approprite sponsor for a windsurfing event. I've already drowned two phones whilst windsurfing, and they were in an aquapac. Hopefully the driphone setup is more reliable.

The race organiser sang the praises of DriPhone at the first skippers meeting. Then went to launch the start boat and his phone fell out of his shirt pocket into the tide. He now owns a DriPhone case.

Race format was 10 rounds of races max per day. Each round was split onto 5 heats of between 6-9 sailors. One Women's heat, one silver fleet and the rest randomised with the open class sailors.

Each day we sailed two rounds then had a 15 minute break. Then 4 rounds and a break for lunch and then the remainer if the wind was still up.

Between each round enough time was available to come ashore to change sails and boards before needing to get on the water to work your way back upwind to the start.

No limit on number of sails and boards (there was last year when the Oceanic title was up for grabs for those wanting to chase that. Those not wanting to chase is could have unlimited gear).

Chris Lockwook and I-Stack Devries had two boards each. Chris only had two sails. His 6.2 and a 7.8. Those two lads fly aye. I-stack with a badly cut foot and barely able to walk on land could still chuck his gear around the course in quicktime. He anesthetised it very well during the prize giving. Photos may follow.

And no limits on the board type, eg classes? Formula, RS1 etc? Or pure slalom boards with four outboard straps?

Interested because I like the idea of open races without limitations on gear to some degree..... keep it real, accessible...

The NZ slalom nationals is such a well organised event with action packed racing for 4 days or more.

The conditions in Dunedin are well underrated and unpublicised.

Every heat is planned out before the event even starts by random number generators and there is the open division for most sailors in 3 or 4 heats and then the womens and silver fleet (novice).

The open division is the one were randomness matters since the novice and womens are generally in the same heat number every round. The open division sailors need to go to the heat board in the morning of each racing and then write on their hands the heat number in each round. For 10 rounds, such as 2, 3, 2, 4, 4, 4, 3, 2, 2, 2 .

The breaks are as described above by nzloopy ( not as loopy as he used to be from the stories )

Now if i was to race heat 2 and finish i would wait in the beach about 10 minutes before sailing out to get ready for the heat 3 on the next round and it would be like this until major breaks so it is continuous slalom racing and excellent practice for starts and gybing in the most perfect slalom conditions on the planet.

If flat water, consistent winds that are generally up between 20 to 35 knots, perfect 6 gybe mark downwind course and a high level of local NZ talent doesnt appeal to you then i dont know what to say

Bring on the 2013 NZ slalom nationals, and lets hope that Anton and Luke (Bjorn Dunkerbeck size sailors) don't learn how to get going in lighter winds and turn a little faster, since these guys scare me on the race course haha! Laurence is the up and coming NZ youth star and he has pushed me on a couple of races. Paul Viliestra sailed the entire competition with a broken toe and his foot was well swollen at times.

2013 NZ Slalom Nationals...... AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!!
