Yep as above Air NZ good with gear, and found booking through Virgin for same Air NZ codeshare flight (direct perth-auckland) was cheaper than booking direct with Air NZ. Not sure if this is still the case.
Air NZ are not as relaxed as they once were. Worth double checking the allowances before you book. They stung me a couple of months ago and one of the fellas from here(nz) is going with virgin for his next trip because of the allowances

Be aware that 2.5m is now the maximum length for sporting gear on AirNZ and if you get an anal check in assistant they will enforce it !!
