20-25 knots side/cross shore winds every day. Consistent logo to mast high waves for nine months of the year. Apparently Kauli and friends spend quiet a bit of time there testing next seasons gear.

... I hope they are paying you well to go there!!!

I drove from Halls Creek to Port Hedland to drop off a hire truck. Dropped it at the airport, then jumped on a plane to Perth. That was enough of Port Hedland for me.

Just checked the property prices there, farrk. They make Turramurra and Wahroonga look cheap. I don't understand why land in a town in the middle of nowhere costs so much when there is nothing surrounding the town but scrub and sand.

They better be paying you at least 90K a year coz the rents there are stupendous. This is coming from someone who lives in Sydney, used to rent and bought a place in Sydney last year.

Why is the town dodgy? Wouldn't the windsurfing there be great?

Issue is lots of work, no place to rent, soooo up goes the price per week up there.
We (Company) rent a few for work team members families, one chap pulled the pin, started with another group, and wont vacate the house we have lease on. Just said, "sad, I ain't moving, and by the time you get me out I will have made my money". End of discussion. No chance of even a bit of mental pressure to move him on, he got legal involved first time we spoke to him

Hahaha

Reminds me of a Project Manager from South Ifrica we employed to work in remote North Queensland - He was totally shocked when we told him he wasn't allowed to "beat" someone with a stick for being a little slack or caught bludging.

That stick is called a 'shambok' and can be very effective at increasing productivity.
Failing the use of the shambok you can always use your belt for some persuading and just remember to say this in your best Yarpie accent when you're about to dish out the good stuff.

'Hona pit man, this will ert me more than it will ert you... it's for your own good for sure'

I just think it is very selfish when one exploits their situation as in the story outlined by Mineral... when people have bugger all consideration for others and then try and hide behind the law in a bid to better themselves financially AND at the detriment to others... this is when the use of the 'shambok' can be very effective and humbling.
Karma can take a long time to come round man, this is why we sometimes speed up the process !

Yes you can sail there, it's tidal, very hot, dry mining town.

People who work there for more than a year are either alcho's or go troppo

Accomodation is limited due to high building costs.

Unless the money is really good or you are after an authentic Australian outback experience don't do it.

thanks for the insight......yea the money is really bloody good.
Working FIFO so I can get out every few weeks.
I will only go if I can sail.

I seriously doubt you would be sailing. Most of the FIFO jobs are 12 hour shifts, 1 week during the day, second week during the night.
You are too buggered to do anything other than down a few beers and go to sleep.
Then you fly out.

No time for fun

luck has it I'd be an electrical draftsman and I should be able to work my hours to get wet every once in a while.....As long as I get a good quantlty of drawings into the system.
I believe its 10 hour shifts, Sunday off.

Worked there for 10 yrs, with bhpb. Must fall into the alcoholic category.
Grumps knows what's going on, you don't have time after 12 hrs to either socialise or exercise.
I didn't do any sailing there at all. Lots of fishing, heaps of drinking, plenty of big bad bities, and a ship load of sandflies. Hope you're not allergic.
Get in and make some money, then leave...

A friend once said to me "it's not a matter of if you get broken into but "When", took us almost two weeks.
You may pay as much as $850.00 a week rent and live next door to someone who has thier rent paid for them. Draw your own conclusions.

You'll probably notice that the only people that stop there are either lost or broken down.

Grasshopper, look at Karratha a couple of hours down the road. Great place, lots of work and you can even get a sail in at Dampier or out near Cossack (on an easterly). Even Exmouth is closer at 5.5 hours down from Karratha.
