When people rig multiple sails for a session, what do people do with the sail they are not using ?
Where I sail, I can not leave the disused sail in grassy rigging area, as it, it will get walked on (like what happened today as I was rolling it up) or knocked off. So, my only option is to stow it on the beach.
If it's really blowing, how do people ballast the sail on a beach ?. Kiters throw sand on their teaba.. kites to stop them blowing away. I was wondering if this technique is any good for a rig ?

i usually just put my sails (which are cammed) in the water, shallow enough so the boom stops them from drifting away but deep enough so the middle of the sail fills with water. works fine for me.

so the wind is blowing 45deg on the mast foot and mast sleeve.

OK point mast foot into the wind. Then move the sail so the wind is still coming towards the bottom of the sail but slightly from the mast sleeve side.
I leave them in 30kn like that no probs
Just prop it up against a fence or a wall, clew up mast sleeve on the ground,with the wind keeping pressure in the rig.You can stack multiple rigs like this and they wont go anywhere and no one or thing can walk on them.

OK mine and Gestalts combined: get a 4ft plastic star picket (won't hurt anyone or rust etc if it is a placcy one) and drive it into the sand where u sail.
Place sail in my pozzie, and use a stainless clip and rope to attach to picket for even more safety??
You can use a dog screw to stop them blowing away but I wouldn't leave a sail lying around in the sun.
As Mark said, but make sure your battens are bowing up, otherwise a good gust and it's gone!
Hi Guys. Thanks for your replies. Just some additional info; the boom of my unused sail is removed (I've only got one sail, and a few local sailors have told me to remove the boom - orientate the sail in the usual position on the ground, and then put the boom on the bottom of the sail to stop it blowing away - due to turbulence). Where I sail, inbetween the road and the beach are grassy dunes - no fences, no trees - no wind shallows. The Seabreeze is cross shore.
I was wondering if I could put the sail on the beach (face the mast foot into the wind as Mark_australia said, and put some sand on the bottom of the sail as ballast. Sand will naturally cover the sail anyway, as the beach turns into "rivers" of sand. However, I am a bit worried what this will do to the sail when sand goes to the mast sleeve. Am I able to get this sand out without rerigging it ?, if not will this sand damage the mast and mast sleeve ?.
Mark_Australia: the star pickets is a good suggestion... but sand will still end up covering the sail when she blows, so I might as well just do what I suggested above.

NotWal: What's a dog screw ?. Re: leaving sals in sun: The dilemma when sailing under/power powered is, should I rig the other sail ?. By the time you do that some days, you miss the window and the wind either returns to previous state or dies in the arse 
I'm erring on leaving the unused sail in the car.

bubs: That idea is attempting at a lake :).. when it blows at Semaphor, I wouldn't leave a sail in the water for more than a minute, as a wave may damage it.

I reckon you should buy another board to keep it in place! I can do you a great deal on one... or two, just in case you rig up a third sail
A dog screw is a thing that screws into the ground for tethering dogs. You can get them at a pet shop.
You could put a car cover over it. One of those light parachute material things. They must be a whole lot cheaper than a sail. They wouldn't be perfect uv excluders but they'd be a whole lot better than nothing.
And if you did that, when its time for a change, you could divorce yourself from that dodgy practice of selling cooked sails.
Point mast tip downwind, turn board over and heap sand along rail where it meets the sand to windward for when its really windy.
or just add heaps of sand.....note a few are around the wrong way in this pic at SP, lots of rigs lost that day I think.
I'm with Swoosh, unless you are competing and need the extra rig just rig as you need it.
No point in destroying your sail with sand and UV unless absolutely necessary.
the you tube link on a recent forum had a bloke rig in 1min 30 sec very impressive i think a derig of 1 min 30 sec is possible 3 min to change sail i must admit i liked the mast extension with a build in rachet lever for the down hall wish i had of invented it must get hold of one
