They look to be the same as they have been for at least the last year and a half.
Did you look this up on their website before you went? It's always good to check and make sure you aren't going to get any unpleasant surprises, and it helps to know what their policy is in case the check in person doesn't know.
I know I once had a VB check in guy tell me it was all excess (back when they had their great allowance policy) and before I could tell him what the actual policy was a cabin steward interrupted to tell him it was all counted as sporting equipment and each was 'worth' 5kgs... ahhh... those were the days 
A tip you might be able to use is to send your clothes or other stuff ahead of you via Auspost. It is generally cheaper (at least in Aus) than what the airlines will charge.
The rules have always been similar for many years. In the past they gave dispenstation on a regular basis, I have never been charged excess in the past and this occurred on many occasions when I trevelled with windsurfing gear.
I am just letting others know that they are sticking to their own rules now.

apparantly at the moment, Virgin and Emarates are the best airline to go with at the moment!
He biggest change I've found in the last year is you can't talk your way out of it any more. I've been done on 3 out of 4 last flights. Agree about virgin though. Last time I flew with qantas the downsized the plane and told me the gear wouldn't fit on the plane any more. Also on the way to Maui they told me I couldn't take my gear as it was too long to fit on the conveyor belt! Don't fly qantas any more.
