Just saw this on the news today and was wondering how others, mainly Qld regulars, see this threat potentially impacting their decision to go sailing. This would take a huge chunk out of the available sailing coastline. Or whether it's just a case of wearing additional protection clothing in sailing spots where you never thought you'd have to. Just curious as I was just in Burrum Heads and blissfully ignorant in the belief that the irukandji would never venture that far south. ![]()

Maybe us southerner's just like the idea that not everything you come into contact with will kill you ![]()
Wow, thats alarming,
We in NQ deal with these best part of the year and cover up, but to be unwary of such a danger is a major concern.
I have seen the results of irakanji and box jelly stings and I wouldn't wish irakanja on almost anybody. Mega painfull and death is a very possible result.
For years they have been writing off tourist deaths for snorklers/divers around the whitsundays as heart attack whilst diving as it is only in last 10-15 years we have realised what these little buggers are.
For them to be found this far south with no public advisery is a worry.
As the report sais they need some info on numbers and react accordingly.
Hope for you guys this was just very unlucky.
Its a pain in the rse getting dressed up to go W/S.
I am interested in how you cover up? Do you wear one of those Lycra suits they give you when you dive on barrier reef? What about hands and feet, it not really practical to completely cover up. That said I have seen windsurfers in Uk entirely covered in 5 mm of neoprene just eyes poking out from balaclava ! But there it's cold, in the heat of North I can't imagine sailing in a cover all ?
Yep, just a full length lycra rashie, some guys wear booties too but most don't.
The water has been pretty warm this year so its more likely they will extend further south.
That's how big they are relative to a match head but when they're in the water they are virtually invisible even right in front of your face. No chance avoiding them by sight
Here's a photo of Firebob in all his stinger protection at green island yesterday.
Their not as bad out on the reef, no box jelly's and not many irukandji when the SE is blowing.
When you said the other day that you had put on 6 - 8 kg's over summer Bob, I didnt believe you...but is that back fat I see!!!!![]()
Thats why you should wear your rashy until the end of May Bob!
Gives the summer fat time to burn off!![]()
