Looking to move to 400 and 430 skinny or rdm masts.
Is it feasible to buy a second hand one, say 2007/8, and then use new 2009/10 parts to replace any halves that I break?
Guessing that carbon content would have to be similar and it would only work for constant curve but it would make the initial outlay less painful and let me upgrade in stages.
Yes, providing you buy a brand that hasn't changed bend curve in that time (ie gaastra).
Also pick a brand that allows you to buy halves separately (ie Ezzy or perhaps Powerex?)
RDM's are definitely the way to go
