Hey all, i'm new here so be gentle with me ![]()
I just purchased a bunch of new gear, 4 sails and a board. Yes, it would have been wise for me to ask questions before i made the purchases but that's not the way i roll. I'm Canadian, saw some skilled comments here and signed up to tap into this forums great wisdom. So here goes.
I'm 6,3'' - 250lbs/113kgs and have been sailing 28yrs. I have been sailing HOT sails for the last 17years and love them. Last month i ordered HOT's GP2 and GPX sails to go with a new RRD Firestorm 111L Ltd and my current 2011 Tabou Rocket 105 Ltd. Width 68cm & 61cm.
My question. Does anyone have any experience with the GP2 or similar sail (racy twin cam) in an 8.0m size on a 111L Firestorm ? Although i'm not looking for great light wind range out of the 111L I'm hoping it will feel balanced in lit up 8m conditions.
Thanks in advance for you comments/thoughts !
Sorry, no experience of either the Firestorm or the GP2 or GPX, but I have the GPS 8.0 which I use in lit up conditions on an Exocet 67 cm wide slalom board. So I expect your 68 cm wide Firestorm should be fine with an 8.0 if you are well powered. Though at your weight a bigger board (130 L) would get you substantially more early planing with the same 8.0
The rrd firestorm is an awesome board but at your weight and for a 8.0 sail I would go for the 130 L.
I have a 112L Firerace and at 92 kg the 7.8 is the biggest sail I can use on it. (and I pray for the wind not to drop cause it doesn't float much with me and the sail on it !!
)
Thanks guys !
The board i'm replacing with the 111L Firestorm is a 115 Rocket. Although i have a 140L *B Free Formula the 115 R is largest board i have used for years. My light wind kit for at least 5 years has been my 115 Rocket with a 7.5 SDemon. If there is not enough wind for that set up i just don't go out.
My hopes for the 68cm 111L Firestorm is for it to handle the 8.0 GP2 comfortably and offer no less light wind performance than my older skinnier 64cm 115Rocket, yet offer a better top speed. I don't expect the Storm to float me in near no wind or be shloggable, but hope it will be shloggable in less than planning wind.
Will i get the same light wind performance as my older 64cm wide 115L with a .5m larger sail. Do my expectations seem realistic ?
