Want to respray a custom board i have.

What do i do to prep the board ready to respray it and do i need special paint or can i just use the same paint i'd use to paint my car?

All the prep should be the same as respraying a panel on a car. The web has heaps of stuff for that. I''ve used 2pak cause its tough as nails but I think the nelson factory in Maui uses 1pak because they spray it on without any PPE.

Sand all the old paint off leaving the base colour, start with 180 slow speed sander for the deck grip, then 240 for the old graphics, maybe 400 wet n dry if there are sanding marks.

Then get some colours and go crazy..

Here is my latest effort..

Done several boards with this, if you dont want to do the compressor spray gun thing it gives a excellent durable finish.Prep coats recomended but i just used the "cheap as chips" spray putty/primer. You can also do the sugar grip deck trick with the same paint.
keywords - epoxy enamel

Done one board with this but didnt keep it long enough to test long term but was realy impressed with value for money in terms of coverage and finish.
A bit harder to get hold of, speciallity paint shops.

If you have a certain colour that you just have to have, most paint shops will put the colour coded paint in a pressure can for you.

Ive been playing around with the paints over summer. What kinds of paints are you guys using? And anyone got a really good acrylic clear they could recommend??? Using guns and airbrushes, not cans.

Barn, i had that hair do when that movie come out.

Dan use automotive base coats, not enamel or acylic for the graphics, enamel is really cr@p paint and if you use Acylic and put clear over the top it will deleminate the clear.

Actually don't ever use enamel for anything apart from garden furniture.

U-pol do a Acylic cystal clear, this would be good for the clear coat if you don't want to use 2k, 2k is the best for durability.

I've been using acrylic water based auto paints, primarily due to the fumes and the fact I'm spraying in a garage;)
I've used an acrylic clear but the fumes are still pretty bad. How bad are the fumes on the 2k?

Anything that is not 2 pak has a hardness of about 30 (out of 100) whereas 2K is like 90 something)

Try and scratch your car with your fingernail then try it aain with any rattlecan you bought at Bunnings.
Yeah big differance - so I am sure now you want 2 pack.

Who gives a fk about fumes?

$40 for a 3M organic filter on eBay.
Or do it outside.
Or don't spray, I've seen a show car done with a foam roller - 20 coats then compounded and it was awesome. It wuz more choice than a cuzzybro's shiny umport Tuyota fulluz. Good paint can be applied in ways other than spray!

Once you spray 2K you pretty much want to get the hell away from it for half hour, atm i just give it 5 minutes then open the shed door to let the shed air out and do something else for a while, pretty toxic stuff. some water based acyrlics have a strong smell aswell.

If your painting anything just use a good mask 2K will often give you a head ache even with a mask, i usually wear a suit aswell..

The auto air acrylics don't have any fumes at all but have to be cleared. I have a good respirator which works a treat, it's the neighbours that concern me when doing the clear. Just out of curiosity, the acrylic clear (lacquer) that I'm using smells pretty strong. How bad is the 2pack clear vapour wise?

BARNEY-we didn't exactly use your advice for that board you sent over last week.
Just used textas and spray can clear from bunnings
Kids don't need it to be 5x stronger........

Just to clarify, they are POSCA paint pens. They come in lots of colours and you can blend them.

We were going to paint the other half of the top using one of your designs from Ben Severne's board with the lightning bolts in pink, blue and yellow and try and make it look like it is half STARBOARD and half FUNKY JASE. It was a bit too ambitious for me and we wanted to use the board the next day. We love your work though and if we don't get to own one of your artworks, we will probably be ripping one off.
