finally stumbled onto his old vid i've been searching but the way he controls in mid-air on slalom equipment is really amazing

That was some cool footage. Whats the biggest jump anyone has ever filmed or photographed?
Would be interseting to see what people come up with.
Wow, unbelievable footage for that time in the sport. I have never seen jumping like that with a slalom board and race sail ![]()
Good on you JP. You will have to explain to us how to get there, the best way to avoid trouble and get there and back in one piece.
Great video too. Robby is the best.
Man I love that RIP video.
When teaching my Yr 11 VCE P.E classes "what motivates some people to risk death in extreme sports", I've used those Robbie Naish sections, edited with big wave surfin at jaws, snowboarding and sky diving from movie PT Break.
....the students go nuts when they see the height of those jumps. ![]()

Makes you realise how little the average person gets to view elite windsurfing.
P.S- the start if the vid, where Robbies "just cruising" round "his own back yard" Kailuah Bay, always makes me wish I lived there, and is the essence of windsurfing for me. ![]()
I love this guy that's why he's the "man"..full on speed on logo high waves on a slalom board![]()
and sail![]()
incredible..yes i'd really like to know who has made the highest jump too..R.I.P. now that bears to mind the video cassette given to me that had Robby doing his thing on open ocean..his landings really does look hurting if not done right, i'd probably hear my knees krackle
regarding the land, we thought of straw for roofing and insulating but if you were using kerosene lamps or candles for the midnight extra activities it'b a fire hazard for now till we can get our hands on solar panels..i talked to a few furniture builders on the island and they mentioned using coconut lumber priced there at 2aus$ per tree with bark on meaning if you cut the 4sides to get to the core the slabs would be put side to side and for outer covering and bamboo interweaved mats for inside..i just spoke with this swiss guy a few minutes earlier and he has some interesting thoughts of balinese style cabanas..remains to be seen though we meet thursday. The bottom line here is the cottages must be reflective of the surroundings(foliage, trees, terrain, etc.) and as less cement as possible only the local volcanic rock available for any hard surfaces to be made..as for moby if you all don't mind a boat trip for now since the local airline has stopped operations till mid-nov.season starts oct. then i guess it'll be just ok..tranquility is a must but there's 2 local karaoke bar 5kms. away![]()

> More (...) people need to see the hardcore aspect of windsurfing.
I agree. This was done on a plank, just about. It's not the quiver and the trailer and equipment. It's the guy.
Hi Folks,
It's interesting to keep an eye on the sail during those high jumps. You'll notice that there's no twist-just heaps of power. Thinking back on those old days it seems to me that jumps did used to be higher. What do you reckon-is it the effects of sail twist depowering in flight, or just age, with the associated wussiness that comes with accumulating injuries, aches and pains?
Not that I'm anti-twist or anything. I just love the loose feeling of wave sails these days, but wonder whether some lift was sacrificed along the way.
Cheers, Jens
Might be the eyes going? I can see twist... I can even see the leach near the head flutter a couple of times..
My understanding is that we run bigger sails now with twist than what was used in the same wind conditions pre-twist. So the lift is the same, but the control is increased, along with the comfortably usable windrange..
Damn that guy is fast - that last segment just before the end is fair honking without even a slight hint of being uncomfortable!
Still - everything was bigger, brighter and better back in the day! Even if we did have to walk 6 miles to school in bare feet in the middle of winter after a breakfast of cold stodgy porridge...![]()
Interesting note Jens. Now that you mention it, we don't get to see this type of jumps anymore on the Tube and others, or I have missed them. I mean height/speed/length of jumps.
Can anyone point to a modern equivalent? There are so many pros and clips now, there must be some somewhere.
gotta have the heart or just plain balls for it-bottom line..that 14yr. old kid surely could match height but not just on any equipment..most of the high flying vids that i've seen have guys mostly about to rotate when landing and can't get a straight path to go on powered maybe dunkie could, never saw a vid of albeau or pritchard yet though
i'd really like to see more of them aerial shots on long distance runs it's fun to see..anyone got any![]()

Some time ago, Boards magazine ran an article saying that the old tight-leach sails (and the use of slalom boards, with their higher approach speed) DID make for bigger jumps.
The twisted sails may make for higher speeds because of reduced drag, but that doesn't mean they'll make for higher jumps when lift may be the most important factor.
I don't understand how they achieve those heights.
I've seen myself times at Wanda (not in a few years though) in perfect strong cross-shore southerlies, OK-to-good waves, right choice of gear, perfect speed for height, no excuse. And yet not matching these heights at all. Sure waves there is not Hawaii, but still.
I could never figure out what I'm doing wrong then, nor now. Frustrating.
