Well the suite of apps for sailing has just gone up a notch.

There are wind meters, session recorders, gps speed and distance, wind fotcasts and now this: Sail Size!!

Put in your weight and the windspeed and the app tells you what sail to rig. Sure it doesnt take into account the board size but hey, I am sure it will come in the update.

Too easy.

If people sent more time sailing and less time dicking about with an I Phone then you would not need and app.

It can't get that good anyhow, the guy in the photo is not on the plane and needs a heap bigger sail.

My Sony Erricson only has hundreds of useless apps.

... that said I had a plan for an Augmented Reality app for the iPhone. Point it in any direction and it will overlay wind speed, wind direction and distance to where reading was taken. Feel free to steal as I'll never get the time. There are some libraries that make it look easy.

Its free on a $30-$40 monthly cap with most telco's. Look into it. I think that there will be a flood of second hand 3GS ones on ebay now that there is a new one.

Yeah lets all just climb into a cave and sing kumbaya. We can craft tools out of flint and sticks.

They should have stopped with the trusty motorola brick. How can you improve on this?

Technology is there to make our lives easier, boards faster, sails lighter... embrace it.

Thats harsh. Considering how quickly this technology progresses I cant even imagine what these smartphones will be doing in 2 years.

I don't normally have a problem with sail sizes so much as fin sizes. There used to be a calculator somewhere on the site but it's changed I theenk

Thanks DavMen, when I choose my sail size I look at what other people have rigged, ignore them and rig the wrong size, works for me.

i've reverted to the communists gear selection method.

one setup for everything. well almost.

internal propaganda.....

hmm looks light, better rig the 5.8
hmm looks moderate, better rig the 5.8
hmm looks moderate to fresh, better rig the 5.8
hmm, looks pretty windy, better rig the 5.3

same for fins

hmm looks light, better use the 24cm choco
hmm looks moderate, better use the 24cm choco
hmm looks moderate to fresh, better use the 24cm choco
hmm, looks pretty windy, better use the tri fins

same for boards.

hmm looks light, better use the freestyle board
hmm looks moderate, better use freestyle board
hmm looks moderate to fresh, better use freestyle board
hmm, looks pretty windy, better use the freestyle board

only point of conflict now is how much downhaul.

That allready exists for the iPhone. Its called windAllert (see windAllert.com).

You pick you favorite spots, the range you want even the wind direction, and save. Next time its 20 knots or whatever and blowing in you preselected direction your phone goes off! you can also configure so that it only alerts if the average is over what you have put in so it will not allert on the gusts.

Screen shot below of where you configure the allert settings. you pick the location off a map an find the nearest wind beacon:

Well this is the most rediculas thing ever, and a 6.3m on a wave board in 18 knots, maybe if you weigh 100kgs.. so in 18 knots a slalom racer would be on a 6.3m? more like a 7.8m.

i think i would suggest to put the iphone away and talk to someone on the beach who had already been sailing, you may even make some new friends..

It's just sad that people depend so much on technology and service that they have stopped thinking fo themselves.

And yeah it just doesnt work, i use an 8m2 in 18knots and i am 85kg.

As much as I love my Mac, this is exactly why I was turned off buying an iPhone. So many apps just seemed to be a substitute for people using their brains.
