I have a few different sails, the main ones I use are a 6.5 Severne NCX and a 5.8 KA Kult. I generally use the 6.5 in winds above about 15 knots.

At what wind speed would you recommend I change down to the 5.8?

I am sailing flat water (albeit choppy at times) on a 105 Hypersonic although I intend on using the 95 Sonic on windier days.

it rather depends on how many pies you've been eating lately

If that's the Sonic 95 I'm thinking of, Red's old board? He should never have sold it, nor should've I.

It goes really well with a 6.0 at just over 20 knots of wind. I've never been able to equal my top speed on a sonic 95 in the Gerroa chop on other potentially faster boards.

Yep thats the Sonic I have yet to fully master deep waterstarts, so I am still a little hesitant to use it in the deeper water. Once the wind is more southerly and we are sailing the Lake, I will be using it a lot more as its not all that deep.

So many variables. You can use a bigger sail when either broad or tight reaching as opposed to beam reaching. Depends on what sort of harness you use and the water state. Depends on how tired you are.

However generally I'd go to a 6 or less when the wind is around 18 to 20 knots. Fortunately that rarely happens in Sydney. However I did actually use my Neil Pryde 5.9VX2 last Saturday and it was great.

Main size for me last summer was a 6.6. Mainly because that was my only sail above 5 meters. Now I have a 7.2 and a 7.8. All set for a Sydney summer!

Moby, I thought you were going to take one for the team and move to Perth so we could finally get some good speeds .

Sorry, too many beers

No, all this financial market stuff has put that on hold. I'm not too worried about it as Sydney is a good place and this summer I'm planning on doing some trips up and down the coast. I'm going sailing whenever I can so I need the bigger quiver.
