Spent the weekend in Lancelin and I seem to have been mobbed by Punkies.
Anyone got some tips on relieving the itch? It's intense

tea tree oil is the only thing I've found that works for sandflies/midges.

Owen, all the creams I tried recently worked for a couple of hours and wore off. Best I found was SooV, it has a local anaesthetic in it.
The only thing that truly helped was an antihistamine.

If none of the above work just scratch the hell out of them and enjoy the exquisite but brief relief it brings and put up with the more intense itch afterwards....

ice - as in frozen water. temporary, but as good as anything else. Large areas are a problem.

You will laugh, but rectonol works well to relieve the itch.

We got put onto it when our son was born to help a baby with any mossie bites etc, the anesthetic of the stuff works well and helps relieve for a few hours. I used to go with SooV as well, but have since used this stuff and I thought it worked a bit better.

A sandfly bite to the freckle is not something I would like to witness............

EMLA cream is a full anesthtic topical cream.
If you don't want to feel anything (tattoos, immunisation needles) i definately recommend it. My missus used it when she neede blood test done and couldn't feel a thing.
$$$ but and you don't get much but numbs the hell out of anything it's appplied to

Itch Eze gives a couple hours relief. I use to get smashed by sand flies in Mackay. Worked a lot better than Soov for me. Little yellow tube.

Hot water,as hot as you can handle. It breaks down the toxin, similar to stingray,s

Stop them biting in the first place.
Mix rum and sand together,
Rub on skin.
The little blighters get pissed and throw rocks at each other.

i worked for about six months in the most sandfly ridden place called swan bay. i tried everything possible for my frail pommie skin and the best thing i came up with was scratch the **** out of them and put toothpaste on it and it would stop stinging dont ask me how or why it works stops them itching and just leaves a dirty scab!

I think if Greenie got them like I did at same spot a few weeks ago - that is, 54 bites from knees to ankles then ice won't be much good. Have to sleep sometime

Interesting the hot water thing somebody mentioned - in pure frustration at 4:00am I burned one with a ciggie as I smoked outside wishing the pain would go away. And it did work. Just didn't have 53 other cigarettes, nor the time or lungs for it

Yeah Mark I reckon I got about that many on one leg! It's funny how they only get you on your lower leg. I'm never rigging there again.
And hey thanks heaps everyone for your suggestions.
They are seriously the most intense and frustrating itch I have ever experienced.
Last night I woke at 3am and was scratching so hard I almost started a fire.
The only thing I could think of was fill the bath up with hot water and sit in it.
Yes it worked and I was able to go back to bed.
After dinner tonight I couldn't hold back for another second and went ape ** on both my legs until they were red raw.
I filled the bath up with hot water and once again I have relief.
My wife reckons I need to go to the chemist and get some Polaramine and calamine lotion.
If I can't sleep through tonight I'm definately off to the chemist.

Years ago when bitten baddly in North Queensland, GP gave me a script for meds specifically for this; worked straight away.

Can you tell us where you rigged so we don't go there?

It wasn't whilst rigging it was his 2hr siesta between SUP and windsurfing as he laid around doing nothing.
They are really bad at Lano at the moment but once the wind is in it is fine

Thinking about a big sign warning about deadly sandflies ..... in German and French at all the good wave spots.........
