Thought I'd throw a sneaky vid up on here. Not sure if anyone has ever windsurfed in Egypt, but you should. I went to Dahab for a few weeks and you would all love this place. Now is the perfect time to go; almost no tourists, +25 knots almost every day and fuel is only 0.12c per litre. They do have horrific local beer there though, so one downside...
I was there Nov 2009 for a week during my honeymoon. Only one day of 7 we had no wind, otherwise it was over 20 knots from mid morning every other day.
If your thinking of going to Europe then you must go via Dahab.
That is a nice tidy video Sean.
Very cool scene, and nice to see the awesome iSonic 107 getting on the water.![]()
Great Vid. I was on a cruise ship heading past Dahab last year and it was one of the only spots that was windy in over two weeks of cruising (the other was the mediterranean side of the suez canal). Dahab looked great from the water and there were quite few sand bars situated along the coast. Love the 107!!
I did all the editing in Adobe Premiere CS5, including the short clip on the roof throwing the hat which is actually a series of photos (not video).
I haven't actually figured out how to work After Effects yet, so all the effects in this video are straight out of Premiere. Also, there's no colour-grading in post, I did this all with the camera settings on the 7D so you can see exactly where the GoPro clips are as they are completely different colour!
Thanks!
I lived there for a year and never knew the price of petrol, the taxis fill themselves up.. I would take Sakara over VB.. And the 25knts almost every other day statistic include the un sailable offshore night time winds..
Great statistic to quote to the tourists after a week of no wind..
"c'mon, windguru says we had 25 knots all week"
haha yeap. We were drinking Stella (not to be confused with the nice Belgian one); I would take that over Sakara Gold anyday!
I thought it was only offshore winds there? Fairly sure I only sailed in offshore winds...
Anyone know what the wind is like in summer? Would be pretty hot methinks...
Yeah I was there a few years ago - 30kts every day. More just bump and jump though, no many waves really. Good fun though. Is Kitesurfing still banned? That would be a serious clusterf**k in the Dahab bay if they now allowed it. And yeah the prevailing wind is offshore. I was there in summer (August) and it was hot - 40s most days, but a nice dry heat, so no problem. I'd like to go again, but not sure how easy it is to get to from Perth - can you fly to Sharm from Dubai/Singapore?
Offshore winds coming off the desert, blowing straight out to Saudi Arabia. Not the Bab Bay offshore winds funneling down the Gulf..
Plenty of boardshorts over wetsuits everywhere I looked; pretty sure the kites aren't banned from anywhere.
Great vid - brings back memories.
Lived there in the 1980s. Took 4 of us 6 months of bribing government officials to get a permit to windsurf at 270km beach in Sinai (now called Moon Beach http://boards.mpora.com/directory/holiday-destination-guide/moonbeach-windsurfing-ras-sudr.html ).
Within 2 years there were 20plus windsurfers making the trek from Cairo every weekend to windsurf there. Now the whole coast seems built up.
Going back to my zimmer frame...
