Starboard Carve 2014
Can anyone offer their opinions of the new Starboard Carve as a freeride board for open ocean sailing?
I'm thinking of the 121 as my big board/light wind board. Teaming it up with 7.5 and 6.5 Ezzy Cheetahs.
They say they're faster now. Anyone sailed one? Nice to gybe?
They must be blindingly fast by now and gybe all by themselves.
I bought one in 2003 and every time a new model comes out they are suppoosed to be faster, easier to gybe and easier to get planing in lighter winds.
I think they must be so good by now that they can plane on a windless day. ![]()
If anyone can verify this then let me know and I will buy one.

I've got an earlier (2012) Carve 131 and found it pretty quick but not so fast to plane. I tried the Futura which is starboards freerace board and found it released a lot sooner and was a more lively. I think the Carve would potentially handle the chop better at your local spot. Pretty sure I saw Bill on a futura, maybe you could try his out at Queens and see how you like it?

No they just oscillate from year to year between faster but poorer gybing and slower but better gybing but they only mention the improvement.
Yep, get one now before they rename it to, let's say, "Futura II".

Knockes your trade in for 6 as the Carve is no longer in production.
The Carve has been getting wider (a bit like the average Aussie) so I guess it has evolved a bit. I had last years Carve 121 and it was super quick, fast enough to keep up with a Futura in most conditions but not in acceleration, the Futura forces you to be into the straps early or you get left behind!! I would assume that they have tweaked the 2014 Carve to have a slightly better acceleration without losing its freeride characteristics.
One of the guys up here (Ducati) has an Xcross 115 which he likes for the conditions you have described.
