Hi, Im going to be working in New Plymouth this summer. Anyone got any first hand info on windsurfing there? I would wavesail mainly, not interested in flat water or slalom blasting. Is there a local windsurf shop there now ( I think there was one in Oakura), or should I just take my own gear? I usually sail a 75L quad with a quiver of 5.2/4.7/4.2, but was thinking of getting a 85L board to give me more wind range. How many days a week would I typically get to sail - are conditions consistent in the summer or a bit sporadic? I know the taranaki wave classic is on the week after I arrive, so this might be a good chance to get some gear sorted. appreciate any wise words or suggestions! cheers.
Hey dude,
Was there last summer for a few months. I think you can expect to sail a lot of if you have the time.
Obviously you need a car to get to the spots.
There is a dude there who rents gear, really friendly guy, his name is Spencer, but if your there for any longer than a week I would have thought just take your own. Its often possible to take it on the Air NZ domestic flights contrary to their website...
If you go to the TWC I am sure you will meet a good crew.
Prob best to get on here as they guys were pretty helpful: deepfried.tv/

Send an email to James Dinnis via the Carbon Art web site. He's at Taranaki and a very keen wave sailor. Enjoy its a magic coastline ![]()
i was there during easter time for 2 weeks a few years a ago and the swell was always huge and there was 2 or 3 sea breezes and heaps of fronts, it was windy most of the time![]()
