Well finally taken the plunge and paid for my trip to Maui in june.
Looks like we will be staying near sprecksville for about 18 nights.
I am taking my wife who does not windsurf (hopefully i can persuade her to get some lessons) so was wondering if anyone has suggestions of how to keep the non sailing partner happy!
Can anyone suggest any good tours we can do - ill have a car for maui but will probably also want to do some island hopping to see a few of the sights.
If anyone else is going to be there in first few weeks of june maybe we can have a beer or 2 (hoping we can get good aussie beer over there)

1. road to Hana

Do activities in morning because usually by 12pm on dot wind springs up.
Roar,
I have always thought of doing the trip myself one day, out of curiosity how much did gear hire cost you and what is the quality/selection like?
6. cook, lye in bikini's....help rig gear....and other wifely duties
maybe lie in a bikini's.... bikini's never lie
My wife didn't like the sun and prefered to be indoors in the afternoon. Our bungalow had a DVD player so we just went to WallMart and bought a bunch of movies for her to watch and got some others from a DVD rental place in Haiku. Now I would take a portable DVD player and she could watch an entire season of Sex in City lying around in the aircon while I was out sailing.
Road to HANA is long about 3 hour return trip and 69 bends so I hope she doesn't get car sick. A shorter walk up to Twin Falls just pask Hookipa is well worth it through.
Drive to Lahina - very nice town about 45 minutes away.
If she is into shopping the Shops at Wealea (not sure spelling) which is on the Kihei side would indulge her - long drive though.
you can rent MTB's in Haiku
There is some great forest walks in the West Maui Mountains (drive toward Kanaha and keep going until you see the "Hike Maui" vans parked by the side of the road)
good luck
I bought her a portable dvd player for her birthday this year and shes planning on taking that along with a bunch of dvds :)
She has already been on the web and done a print out of all the major shopping areas on the island :(
Camera wise she got a 18-25 x super zoom - not as good as a slr but it takes pretty decent photos and video (and a hell of a lot cheaper). she took about 500 pics in 1 week on Lord howe so god knows how many she will get in 3 weeks.
I will also be taking my notebook for her to dump pics and movies on so she can clear her sd cards - and I can keep track of my gps tracks :)
Gear rental will be 300 a week or so for all 2009-2010 boards/ sails / full carbon boom + masts.
Charter a chopper if you have some spare readies ($400 for thirty minutes) - and stick her in there with the camera while they follow you around sailing.
You'll get some awesome pictures and video that you will treasure forever, and she'll love it.
Driving right around the island is cool too. You can go around the big volcano - "Haleakala" on one day, and you can get around the smaller one "West Maui Mountains" another day. The views are incredible both ways and the road isn't that bad, regardless of what the hire car companies say.
Horse riding in the flanks of Haleakala is another thing chicks like, and both Paia on the North Shore and Makawao further up the mountain are small towns that also have interesting shops and plenty of chick appeal.
If your missus isn't keen on windsurfing lessons (and Maui is not the easiest place to learn by any stretch...) get her SUP or surf lessons around near Lahaina, or in Kihei. It's heaps easier to learn and if she catches a wave she'll feel like she's really been to Hawaii.
We will be there in July for three weeks, plenty to do for the non windsurfer, but its a very beachie environment in maui!
How about hire a SUP as well as sailing gear, she can cruise around on the south side during the day, or paddle around in the mornings before you get into it after 11.
Snorkelling?
Mountain biking?
Lots of waterfalls, some hidden if she is into exploring further down the hana Hwy,
Shopping is great in maui, especially if the dollar hits parity by June! From my experience most things are 20% cheaper in USA,
Windsuring lessons, catch up with Dave and Suzie Dorn at Action Sports maui, they are great with beginners and will have her up and going in no time,
Are you there in July? If so, we will have some like minded individuals that will be keen for a shopping buddy,
Dave
Highly recommend helicopter tour over Kananha, West Maui mountains, Moliki (shear cliffs/spectacular)- where they filmed scenes from Jurrassic Park! Worth every dollar!![]()
Front St in Lahaina. Shops galore and some very nice bars and restaraunts to relax in after all that shopping![]()
Places like Iao needle and valleys up the back of Wailuku are great scenery.
Lots of good shopping etc on Sth Kihei Rd from Maui Sunset towards Wailea.
Wailea is very exxy though.
Or if you really want that touristy feeling hire a bright red Mustand convertible and cruise through Paia, no one will laugh at you[}:)]
Maui wowie.
Failing that try some introductory scuba diving. My first ever dive was in maui, just swam out off a beach with an instructor. Amazing reef, caves, turtles, sharks, sea snakes, fish, fish, fish. Really one of the best things I've ever done.
If you do do this however, don't be a complete dumb ass like me and go up to teh observatory the next day. Yes really ![]()

Do go up though: www.ifa.hawaii.edu/haleakalanew/observatories.shtml
(I haven't been at night - just thought of it)
Anyone going to maui around august got a spare bed? i'm pretty flexible on when, just need to grab a cheap plane ticket.
I'm looking to go as it seems anywhere euro is off the list due to volcano action. Jeri would be fun, but tickets there are twice as much as to maui.
At least you've only got 1 wife to worry about.
Spare a thought for poor old me..........
.................When I went to Maui, all my wives insisted on coming along.
(it was an extremely "brief" trip!
)
PS: I think that might have been Flipper and King of the Point, sunning themselves in the background.
uummmmmmmm,,,,what else to do in Maui,,,,,,uuummmmmmmm
