Just recently got some bigger cammed sails (7.3 and an 8 meter), and I've noticed the top cam wants to pop off the mast every so often. Is this a down haul problem? Or perhaps too much outhaul? I used the correct mast and recommended measurments (give or take a few centremeters) for the sails. They're Hot Sail GPS sails on a 460 Hot Sail rdm mast.

PS- I'm usung the correct rdm cams supplied with the sails.

Cheers for any tips and info.

Hmmm. Maybe insufficient batten tension?

Probably not enough down haul.
Why don't you ask Hot Sails Maui.

is it the yellow (2011) edition or the newish 2013 pink one ?

The PO had the same issue with my 2011 edition (6.0), got fed up and replaced the cam with a gaastra cam, works fine now !!

Right in the middle- 2012 models. It's mainly the 7.3. The 8 has been sweet. I have a 6.6 and it's also fine. I'm only new to cammed sails, so it's probably pilot error. I might try some more down haul tomorrow. If that fails I'll email the guys at Hot Sail.

they have a nice video on how to rig it, and the GPS does like a good downhaul.

The cams come with spacers, add a few to make it tighter. Also not enough DH will cause the problem as well.

Also, the sails come with 2 sets of cams the rdm and sdm cams, make sure you haven't mixed them up.

Not all, but some cams are shaped with a top and bottom, check the cam is not upside down. If its the right way up then add a spacer to add a bit more pressure to keep it on. Finally, try more downhaul, again this will add more pressure on the cam. Leech should be fairly loss down to the 3rd batten (from counting up from the bottom). Failing all this, email Jeffery at Hot Sails, I'm sure he'll get back to you straight away:)

I have the 2012 7.3 too. Beautiful sail, really fast. I have the opposite problem, when I rig it for overpowered sailing the cams don't rotate as well as with less downhaul - I have to "pump" the sail after a jibe to get them to push through. I know I should change down, but other than the cam issue they handle so well in overpowered sailing.

What does a spacer look like? Could I take one out to make the cam rotate more easily?

Its a little spacer that sits behind the cam. If you pull the cam off the batten it would come off next, it just slides on.

Every one who said more downhaul was spot on the money. Put another 3-4 cm on it today. Pretty soft leech, so a tad more outhaul. Ended up looking sweet, and felt great on the water. Never popped off once in 2 hours, so cheers for that!

I have the 8m GPS, I allways rig the down haul to spec and adjust the outhaul on the water. i still find that adding a spacer or two to the top cam makes is just right. But mine has probably had more use.

I agree with W4W, I found with the 7.3 and 8m that you need to downhaul to the longest spec on the recommended measurements from HSM. Don't go crazy on the outhaul, go to spec on that too for everyday sailing, and when you get an adjustable outhaul, let the outhaul off (so the sail just touches the boom when filled with wind) for downwind runs if you are chasing a 2sec peak or 5x10.

That blue alloy Chinook mast extension you have is pretty accurate. If you are using another extension now, make sure you measure it to make sure the printed measurements on the extension are accurate.......Mark.J and I compared my Chinook measurements with a NP extension and the NP printed measurements were out by 3cm. PM or text me if you want any help......Alternatively MArk.J is a great resource and knows these sails back to front...
