After carrying my gear for years in my ute, I just bought a Hyundai H1 (think you call it I-Load in oz).

Before starting to build my set up I would like to apply some sort of rust prevention treatment to the floor.

No so much asking for a brand name (as it won't be the same here) but more a type of product (preferably non sticky )

Thanks in advance

Is there a custom rubber mat? They work well to catch all the drips.

Yes it has the custom rubber mat, just adding extra care as I do sometimes throw in my gear without rinsing it.

Does anyone do the spray in ute liners there? That would be the ideal.
Next would be any of the auto underbody bitumen type products, applied thick.

Easy and cheap, give it a spray with de-odorised fishoilene around the seams (only), then gaffa tape in thick plastic sheeting across floor and about 10cm up the walls, then a big bit of carpet cut to size.

I have found the electronic rust gadgets to work a treat. I had one in my 80 series and now have one in my Hilux and they work a great. I got my kit from Autobarn Auto store.

as for the uteliner stuff, you can get a DIY kit called "raptor" ute liner or "hippo" liner from the states. Supercheap used to sell Raptor, but i have not seen it for a while, Its an Epoxy based liner you roll on after some prep work.

The rubber mats are great at trapping sand and moisture underneath

Yes, back in the days when cars were very susceptible to rust rubber mats were found to exacerbate the problem. Carpet was preferable. Bare paint is best but doesn't absorb noise. These days you might get away with a rubber mat.

I once heard that a teaspoon of kero in the washing bucket helped. Kero is miscible enough to follow the water into the cracks where rust might develop and leave a protective film. It's just a theory, but sounds plausible.

The electronic devices don't work. If you're eccentric enough to fit one of those you probably also regularly wash the car.

I repainted my floor and added a waterproof plywood pannel, which is sealed with sylicone at the edges.
I was also able to fix the furniture in without making many holes into the sheet metal.

Has anyone else used the cathodic protection (electronic rust protection)? I heard it wasn't bad

Floor tilers use a rubberised, paint on membrane in bathrooms to seal everything before they tile.
This stuff is great on the floor and 15cm up the walls of my van.

Just out of interest my grandad bought a new car in about 1978 - 79.
He only ever washed it with water and a capful of kero, once a week.
They lived in Mandurah about 150m from the water's edge.
Fair enough the car was garaged but it would have seen plenty of salt ...... in 1995 when we inherited it, the car had zero rust.
Still was good about 4 or 5 years later so 20yrs with just water and kero seems to be the go!

Hey Sean,
Great choice on the H1...it will make it so much easier to fit all our gear in when we come to visit!
Not sure if this helps but I bought a hiace van last year which had a rubber floor already installed. After some research I did the following:

1) Strip the existing floor (it was glued) and removed any glue residue etc
2) Silicon any holes in the sub floor (the hiace has all sorts of bolt holes and mount points) with marine silicon
3) Apply a non odourous fish oil to the floor. Let it dry and repeat.
4) Apply a layer of plastic and gaffer tape the edges about 15 cm up the side walls
5) Install a sound proof mat in direct contact to the plastic
6) Install an absorbant layer (ie like a chamois) on top of the soundproof to wick away any moisture
7) Install a rubber floor over the absorbant layer.

I live close to the beach and my van is such a permanent fixture at Inverloch beach carpark that I think the council wants to charge me rates ! The van is outside in the elements and so far, there has been no moisture and sand underneath the rubber mat.

cheers,
Mick
