I did a similar thing using a gaff. got some great underwater fooatge of a marlin we caught up in exmouth.
also saw some cool stuff over in hawaii with these cameras. using a tripod as a fulcrum and a really long pole. the rig had a tilting head setup made out of pvc plumbing fittings and a rope to adjust it. the possibilities are endless.
you should see what spotty has setup!
For those interested
I have put up a real world example of a shoot with the Go pro steadicam in action -
The rig was super handy for this shoot as
-it let me get the camera up over the crowd (for establishing and scale shots)
-as well as some nice stabilisation for tracking (walking along and shooting) of the dancers - it was one of four cameras - but you should be able to pick the go pro shots from the wide fov
edit was done by reflex toohttp://www.reflexfilmsaustralia.com.au/Reflex_Films_Australia/REFLEX_FILM_SCHOOL.html
