In short my valentines day wipe out that resulted in what I though was the corky from hell and a few stiches....had me passed out on a medical room floor with needles being stuck in me everywhere, oxy mask on the works, whilst they debated calling for the Ambo and going into ICU...turns out less than 48 hrs after a perfectly clean cut and what seemed to be a 'sterile' surgery room gave me a dose of Septicemia,
I'd never heard of such before, and now I know first hand all about it....make sure you google it or maybe check this link, If i'd know about I would have gone in earlier, very lucky boy...3 days with my leg up may kill me though, and for the record, the pain as a result of the infection, massive...

Anyway if you dont know about this stuff worth making yourself aware, I have had worse messier/dirty/cuts before this, never given a hoot, think the bacteria may have come from the medical centre....read up and hope doesnt happen to you!

does sound a bit heavy.

i learnt about infection once after leaving a cut on my toe for a week while surfing,
then went to the hospital where they told me it's likely the foot will have to go! thankfully the infection was not in the bone yet.

hospitals and surgeries are breading grounds for bad bacteria.

hope it all ends well.

thats no fun hope you get back on top of things soon.

many many many years ago, i was sailing with dodgy footstraps and started to wear away the skin on top of my foot, got some medical tape the type that comes in those metal tinnny things from chemists and wrapped up the foot and kept sailing got sand/mud etc in it and the next day the infection was up my leg and into the groin, not to mention the fevers and cold sweats etc.
ended up getting a penicillin shot in the backside and heaps of other antibiotics to get rid of it.
if it happened these days it'd probably kill me

A few hundred years ago people died from cuts all the time. Then some Evil Corrupt Scientist discovered how to stop that.

Now the bugs are coming back, one at a time.. Run for your lives!

I think next time, I may get some of that Red Chinese Goo, looks good, betadine is pretty good also, a needle and thread and stich myself up! Safer than going to hospital/medical centre!

Spose I'm not the first or last guy to pick up a nasty infection on Valentines day, thought the nurse was a bit friendly...now I know why!

we used to use Mercurochrome back in the 20th century, not sure if you can get it now.

sorry about the bad luck :(

for infection and quick healing i have discovered that bee propolis ointment works for me
i used it for a deep cut caused by a windsurf injury

if one requires stitching - mmm
not sure i am ready to play rambo
in the old days some family doctors did stitching in their offices/clinics
forget the clinics here now - and hospitals too - too long waits, etc

moral of the story ?
stay in bed with the honey on valentines !!

get well soon !!!

Yeah there is nothing better than mercurochrome. You can still get it at the chemist warehouse. It really dries the cuts & wounds & kills any bacteria. A small bottle is about $6 & will last you for ages. (Don't ask someone under 50 for it as they will probably look at you funny).
Wonderful stuff imho

yes it is great - but may not do a lot for blood infections like septicaemia

There's a reason "mercurochrome" starts with "mercur". Do you really want to put heavy metals onto an open wound? Sure it kills the bugs, but it does a few other things too

Maybe we should change it to quicksilverchrome. Then we can all look cool and fashionable when we put it on our reef cuts.

Betadine & superglue they hardly use stitches anymore The medical grade superglue is purple it has a dye that's the only difference the doctor told me & I've been gluing myself up for years & as a carport & awning installer i get cuts all the time .
My uncle went in for a knee replacement & got golden staff 18 months in hospital but they did save his leg

I would guess that you would ingest more mercury from a tuna sandwich than you would absorb from mercurachrome painted on a wound.
Add to that chinese vegies, vietnamese blowfish (Bassa)and most of the rubbish we import with little control from suspect countries.
Actually Jonesy you were probably lucky not to get golden staph.

Thanks for all the tips,
I now have a home made tonic made up of superglue, food dye, mecurechrome, medicinal honey, magic chinese red goo, I mixed it all up, squeezed it into an old condom I found, figure I can cut the tip off and squeeze the goo into the cut, it safley housed in a container labeled, '**** happens' in my van, along with a bottle of rum to kill the pain!...thinking of mass production and setting up a stand at the markets..just need name..

1 week later, cant take stiches out yet as area to sus and tender, and been dosed up on whole lot more drugs, to beat it..as the bacteria were starting to win again!
I get it beat then it comes back like at the end of the day for revenge (a lot like my ex wife, should rename her Sepis!

What I have learnt, leg up stay put do not move, means exactly that.. seems that going to gym (only did top half) the day after the cut was not smart and may have actually just pumped disease around my body (not that I thought I was diseased at the time just cut and bruised), Doing my Mr Mum routine for my girls, school pick ups, cooking cleaning etc, is aparently not rest either?
And dont leave it so long to get the doctors to check out the injury, seems harden up princess doesnt cut it with these nasty little parasites!

And that big impact cut/collsions like mine or car/bike crashes etc where its not just a cut but massive internal bleeding/bruising combine with a deep cut, mine was right into the muscle, is like Porn/Pizza & Beer for the Sepis Bacteria!

Doing my googling of 'septicemia' i am thankfull that I have been keeping super fit and looking after myself, I'm sure that has helped me avoid the bad side of 50%.

And of course when your out injured, it bloody blows, or is perfect beach weather...and we have had all that in the last week and more to come...
very jelly bags here!

It's that kind of superstitious nonsense that causes all sorts of trouble. Uneducated bleeding hearts who don't like the name of something so they begin the campaign of "pooled ignorance" to get innocuous (or even good) stuff banned. Trouble is that they often succeed because the pollies are usually just as ignorant of the facts. Mercurochrome and Gentian Violet are 2 examples straight off. Fortunately someone with a basic high school education has had another look and mercurochrome's now back off the banned list and gentian violet might soon follow.

A little yr8 chemistry wouldn't go astray. For example:

Take some exceptionally poisonous gas (Cl) and some extremely dangerous metal (Na) and you get?
Take some extremely combustible dangerous gas (H) and the ultimate oxidiser (O) and you get?

When 2 or more elements combine to form a compound you get a completely different substance with completely different properties. There's NO free mercury (Hg) in mercurochrome, just as there's no free chromium (Cr) in mercurochrome.

Sorry Brady. Don't take it personally - just one of my "corns"
