just spoke to a mate who is there.
said they found him floating on his back, swam him in and began resuscitating him but couldn’t revive him...
sounds terrible....

Definitely a windsurfer? The press gets us mixed up with kiters sometimes.

Anyway, that's really sad.

My condolences.

Good time to ask: Should I always wear an impact vest and/or helmet in the surf?
I'm only just starting to venture out in 2-4ft onshore slop. No loops or anything.

Yes.

It's deceptively easy to get knocked unconscious or get separated from your kit. Why risk it?

Ive been ko'ed in the surf before while sailing. By far one of the scariest things that ever happened to me, especially the thoughts thatgo thru your head as the lights go slowly out..... The most important thing is to keep an eye on your mates and make sure you always see that head bob up from the water after a drilling.

A very, very small number of people die while windsurfing every year, and it can be down to faulty gear, unexpectedly tough conditions, or just rotten luck...every time you sail, you have to accept that there's a risk. You can improve your odds hugely with safety gear, but the right sort of freak mishap will still do you in regardless.

Very sorry for that guy and his family...
