I've been out of the loop for a while .In the "old " days we used to get heaps of 20 - 30kt westerlies in Winter.Where are they?

Strange weather indeed. It feels like summer and its not yet spring. I must say I much prefer a north easter to a westerly though so I'm not complaining.

i dont think i have ever seen a good westerlie, either your sinking in the lulls and getting blasted in the gusts

I think in with me its a case of reminiscing & only remembering the good times..

I read or saw on TV a story about the changing weather in SE Australia. The CSIRO has done a fair bit of modeling of our weather systems and they believe the winter weather is increasing being dominated by ridges of high pressure. These keep fronts from moving up too far north, thus NSW is not getting the fronts it used to.

True Story. I quit my job to work for myself doing small building projects. Thought I would be able to 'down tools' every time the wind picked up and go windsurfing. Yeah right! I am now booked up 'til christmas and for the last month I have been working at a house right on the waters edge. It's blown a westerlie every bloody day that I have been working there and it is such a pain! Blowing down my dust barriers, blowing stuff out of the bin! it's hard just to open the front door! Bloody westerlies. Plus I see these guys out the front windsurfing all the time! They should go and get a proper job

Head south sboardcrazy! (sorry). We're getting heaps of Westerlies, mainly NW though...I'd trade you a dozen of them for a couple of S/Easterlies though!

Got worked yesterday in gusts over 40knts. Going from slogging to bedlum in 3 secs.

Did two runs on new JP FSW and hit a stick or similar and punched hole in board the size of your thumb

Nice to be back on the water. Bring on the NE'rs

I feel better now reading these..I went out & spent the first hour trying to get upwind so i didnt hit bottom ( so i couldnt use the gusts to plane) & thinking whats wrong with me?Then 20 mins of 25kts came through & I actually got motoring !Wow .. now I remember why I sailboard!
Unfortunately I was so stuffed by then I was an accident waiting to happen. The mast came down & whacked me between my head & shoulder so that will feel good tomorrow.1st time Ive seen the sense in wearing a helmet.
I cant gybe! Have to post a topic..Ive had practise in flat h20 & 5- 10kts & can manhandle the board around using the rig & weight & flip after clew 1st. If I got my act together I could gybe when planing but inbetween?????
In choppy conditions & wind in the sail so it is hard to pull on but when im still subplaning I just go straight ahead? Pity you lose it if you dont use it..

SBOARDCRAZY.... I think I saw you sailing (yellow/blue Sailworks Revo?) at Squids with the kites today as I was driving south to Swansea.

I sailed at the back of Swansea Caravan Park. It faces west towards Wangi. The water is knee to shoulder deep and is completely sandy bottom with patches of weed here and there. It's part of the channel, however not complete channel as it is on the edge of it. There are a few little channels that run off the main one and they are parallel to a westerly. This means dead flat clear blue water for fast runs. You can also head out a bit if you want good chop.

If you want to get better at gybes and in my opinion have a much nicer sail (clear water/sandy bottom), you should head down here in a westerly or SW - NW. At anytime you can step off your board for a rest. Myself and a few others will head here if it's west and no waves for Birubi. Check it out next time.

Peto,

that sounds like a fantastic place to sail westerlies. Thanks for sharing. Does the water flow fast there due to it being part of the lake entrance?

Yep was I splogging along? ( unless it was the last 20 mins I would have been)..
Thanks.Ill give it a go.I decided today that the fear of running aground because I was too close in was ruining everything. It was Ok when the wind picked up as I could point higher & get out further.
Is the wind pretty consistent there? ( for a Westerly..) Only problem with going there is the channel is even further to drive! It took me 1.20hrs this am to get to a sail! Looking forward to NE as Coal pt is only about 40mins away.
Coming from near Cessnock..I wonder if it would be a quicker/shorter trip going around the bottom of the lake?

I've kayaked around there & remember it being pretty shallow in places. Is that a problem?
