Check this link of wind readings at Willis Island in QLD - in the path of TC Yasi.

100 knots to 0 knots - I assume that's the eye of the storm?

www.bom.gov.au/products/IDQ60801/IDQ60801.94299.shtml

Poor QLD can't get a break at the moment.

I hope everyone will be safe.

hey guys check out flinders before it gets removed from the coastline.

www.bom.gov.au/products/IDQ60801/IDQ60801.94290.shtml

strongest winds are always on the southern flank of a cyclones eye in the southern hemisphere. flinder will be an indicator of where things are at.

When I first posted this, the Willis reading was showing 100 then 0 - just like that.

I assume the readings only record up to 100 knots? Weird that it should fail at exactly that speed.

In reality it was probably much more as the system moves through. They're saying winds will reach 300kmh+, that's around 162 knots to my calcs.

Just incredible...

Just listening to and watching those storm chasers who are driving to Lucinda as I write. Their latest advice is that Cardwell is in Yasi's sights. Cardwell is right on the beach 90 kms south of Innisfail near the north west corner of Hinchinbrook Island.

Look at the pressure reading too - the lowest was 937.9 hpa - must have been close to the eye (the central pressure: 922 hpa).

We are 300k directly south of the eye, getting about the same as when Anthony went over a couple of days ago, Estimate winds around 30knts gusting to 50, Rain is light to moderate.
Overall pretty good here. Hope it stays the same. If it stays on the same track it shouldn't get any closer to here.
Powers still on but Airlie bch has lost it.
Just sitting tight listening to the family winge about whats on TV.

My iPhone sailsize app tells me to pack the .7m sail. The smallest I got is my sons 1m ezzy... I'd be overpowered on a 1m sail!

The closest radar that I can find to the eye is at Flinders Reef....maybe 60 klm or so from the eye. It still reads 128 kph which is about 70 Knots. Can't seem to find anything in sinc with TV saying about 300 kph.
I'm a bit bewildered

Having seen the local beach in 70 to 75 knts on fathers day last year I have to say I wouldn't want to be around in winds double that. I went to the headlands to take some photos / video and had crawl on all four the last few meters because it was impossible stand up.

Anyone in the direct path of the eye that think they ride thi one out at home either lives in a steel reinforced bunker or hasnt really thought things through.
