Very new to wave sailing and was keen to here what you guys think is the ideal wind direction for wave sailing? I've watched a few clips on Youtube, and some on here, and it seems an on-shore cross wind is the go? Also what wind strengths would you consider ideal?

Cheers for any info

cross-shore to Cross-off for wave riding (waves are smoother and allows top turns to be more easily vert and faster too)

cross-shore to cross-on for jumping. usually more consistent wind when onshore so easy to build up speed

I personally like sailing in cross-on waveriding as well, like the backhand sailing in these conditions. I would suggest as you are just starting out that you focus on an Cross-onshore breeze - if something goes wrong the wind and waves will blow you in

Lucky on the MNC Phil that we both have so many spots between cross off to cross on - we are blessed !!!!!

Thanks Adam.

So by cross-shore (on or off), you're reffering to the wind behind you when on the wave, right?

So keen to play in the waves again! Tried yesterday but it was nearly dead flat and the wind was all wrong, I kept being ripped across the faces, not down them. Too offshore I think? It's all new to me

Round 4 with the Big Banana on an open beach tomorrow

Scenario: If standing on a beach that faces dead east, and you are facing and looking out to the ocean then the following would be the case.

A NE wind would be cross-onshore and you would feel it blowing into your left side and face at a 45 degree angle.

A N breeze is cross Shore and would be blowing at you from the left and going straight down the beach

Cross off would be a NW, and would be blowing from the left at 45% hitting your back and side.

Damn I hope that made sense Phil.

Clear as mud Yep, makes sence mate. Like in this clip, this being effectively our northerly wind.

Given the direction that Kauli dropping in on the opening sequence (and struggling a little dropping straight down), and the direction of the guy sailing out in the background of the opening sequence, and the spray coming off the wave in following sequences I would say more cross-off, like our NW

Top vid though, how long are the rides
