Can anyone clarify for me the article on the front of todays local paper - Weekend Courier 15th May 2009. It states there will be designated areas in Safety Bay for Windsurfers and Kiters.
That is each will have their own area to rig up at, launch from and where to sail.
Can anyone tell me exactly where those areas are?
Thanks.
Hi Micheal
Kiters can now rig up in the yacht club car park and kite on the road. Once they have all been cleaned up by cars the intermediate and beginner windsurfers can have their "SAFE" easy entry to ocean sailing, learner location back, without the threat of death by kite strings.![]()
One of the safest learner locations close to Perth other than the river has been ruined by the kiters. Now the advanced sailors can sail out in the bay, but the intermediates are now forced into the bottom corner of the pond with barely enough room for gybing let alone 5 or 6 sailors in there as well. You can blame the euro tourists this season and the schools that teach in the top corner.![]()
another case of natural selection, survival of the fittest, evolution.
Its like in nature, the weak runts of the litter get pushed to the bottom and eventually become extinct, while the fitter, stronger creature thrives.
The cycle of nature.
Evolve or become extinct.
Mother nature is cruel,but fair.![]()

I attended meetings with City of Rockingham, DEC, DPI, WAKSA, WWA, SBYC and SBWC over the summer, I have a draft map of the proposals in the shop if you would like to come and look at it, you will need to call ahead however as we are not there unless it is windy at the moment.
I do want to point out that there are no schools that teach in the top corner or any part of the pond, we are the only licenced school for that area and have for years operated on the north-west side on the sand spit and educate all beginners we come into contact with to do likewise. You will find that any teaching/learning going on in the pond is the general public or maybe the odd rogue operator.
My understanding is that DPI is currently working on draft signage for the area, but it has been some months since I have last heard from them.
The on water designation was effectively the top (windward in s/w) third/half to be reserved for kitesurfers and closer to the road for windsurfers then rigging area's would reflect the on water areas. It was acknowledged that having the kitesurfers upwind of the windsurfers defied common practice, but also that it did seem to be reality in the area and signage was to stress that the pond area was only for experienced kiters who would have the skills to stick to their designated area.
red thumb away.but you all know its true.

Nice cut'n'paste from the equal opportunities commission website or similar, but what exactly is your point regarding kiters and windsurfers getting along?
I dont think they could quite make up rules for the area mark but they can sygest it.
In my experience on a busy Saturday afternoon in summer when i was learning the pool area was extremely busy. Not being able to windsurf that good i found myself in danger when i was stuck in the middle of some extremely fast moving windsurfers and kite surfers.
On the return pass from the outer wikikki to the pengunin island side of the pool on both sandbanks in the late afternoon can clouded with porr visability leading to effected judgement due to the sun reflection.
I would promote the idea and have been in the situation where i was to in experienced to be in such a high traffic area.
I think alot of new people kitesurfers are sticking to sandbank of to the point of the pool with windsufrere sticking to to run from the jetty to the pool along the shore.
I dont believe they need signs as it would only take a short time for anyone being stuck in the center continually to work out it wasnt a safe place to hang around.
I think the grassed area that is there already is good just some wanker keeps on stealing the hose connector on the tap.
To all windsurfers who have sailed safety bay for the last 35 years.I would not be concerned with proposal. The wind dynamics will dictate the terms through wind velocity , wind direction and surface chop.SSW wind 18 knots plus will make it very difficult for the kiters to maintain position. The kite techology has not been developed to harness those conditions.
Under WA tort law no court will up hold duty of care if a wind powered water kite is up wind and involved in a non zero harm incident.
Windsurfers relax. There will be a report released in the near future on kiting impact on tern island.
Just like to point out that if we're talking about natural progression and that sort of thing, jet skis and f====ing big motor boats will sort out all of us if we keep fighting, oh and another thought the average sail board is a hell of a lot bigger and harder than the average kiter so get outa tha way ! On another note thats three kiters Ive rescued so far and where I come from we seem to get on ok, oh yes I've been beaned on the head a few times by out of control kites but they scare more than hurt. Cheers we are going to have to learn to get on afterall Bob
I cannot understand what the fuss is about, I ended up sailing lots around the pond this year, when the shark scared me out of the deep sound! Even with 20 odd windsurfers and 25 kites it always seems reasonably safe, with a bit of routine to the high speed movements.
It struck me that no sailor could complain about congestion, each chose to sail there, they must like it! There is such a lot of underused water space from Point Peron to Port Kennedy, ideal for kites and windsurfers, why do they all sail in one spot?
There is no need for rules and signs, just a simple message.
Caveat pengo......user beware!
Just another thought even Robbie Naish Sails and Kites and now b---er me he even rides a SUP . Now an SUP with a sail track, I could handle that!, and I just remembered seeing a guy ride a Mal with a kite. Takes every kind of people to make the world ya ya ya you all know the song. Bob
apart from saftey
A large advantage of keeping together is that it drives people to be better and push the limits.
People learn off other people.
Its not showing off its an invitation to push yourself harder.
That why people go to the same spot.
the pool is also surrounded by sandbanks and is extremely calm in windy conditions
