My budget doesn't allow me to have an SUV or a wagon. So if you are a windsurfer with a mid-size sedan or hatch, would you tell me how do you manage to get your gears to the beach?
Board has to be on top, I guess. How about masts and sails
Thanks.![]()
you'd be surprised what you can fit in a hatch. I have a vw golf & can fit my formula gear inside (just so no change of getting a 11.6) - 10.7m sail & 550 mast, lean the passenger chair back & put in the boom down first with the sail & mast on top to the bottom of the passenger footwell, i have to put them in diagonally. The formula board goes on the roof. A couple of times i've got the formula gear + 2 slalom sails, 3 masts & 3 booms along with my 105L slalom board all in the car. I've seen quite a few guys turn up in hatch backs with all their gear inside a hatch back. Get a thick plastic bag to put over the end of the sail when you put it in after going for a sail, unless you want salt water rusting your floor. The lockable roof rack straps are good if you need to leave your car anywhere with the board.
Good luck ![]()
Been from Canberra to the coast a couple of times in an N14 Nissan Pulsar. Only takes a few minutes to get the front passenger seat out. Then 2 boards a couple of sails and booms fit inside no worries. Economy is much better if you can keep stuff off the roof.
Had a ford laser hatch with passengers seat layed flat and backseat folded down could fit 2 boards and up to 4 sails, 3 masts, 2 booms and all the associated gear INSIDE the car, the longest board was 275 long
hyundai excel sprint, i fold the front seat back and the rear seats forward and it fits (inside)
240cm wave board,
2 booms,
2 plastic boxes with extensions and other crap
5.3, 5.8, 6.4, 8.5 sails
all of my fins,
430, 460, 490 masts in bag
still room left for a bit more gear and i can safely see out all of the windows.
I got the record. Hyundi Accent Hatch. Back seats down, front passenger seat forward n laid back (headrest off).
6 masts
2 booms
8 cambered sails (5m-7.6m)
speedboard
80l slalom board (both in bags)
harnesses, wetsuits, mast extensions, base, half doz fins etc, etc, etc
....and a 105l board on the roof.
Was carrying gear for 2, but my mate was in another car. Couldn't see a lot (nothing) out the passenger side!
I traveled to Lancelin once...
Toyota Starlet, FSW board, 2 sails mast and boom and luggage all inside the car.
You can fit quite a lot in a Hatch!!!
Had a Pulsar hatch for a while and that fits the gear fine too.
Just get your self a Yogayak stick it on the roofracks and all your problems are solved you wont need to windsurf anymore.
Thanks everyone. Seems like I have nothing to worry now...guess I'll get a hatch.![]()
I'd been going to the beach with my partner in a van. But now I'm on my own.
Anyway, THANKS!!
