Sorry but had to laugh at this one...

I was always told to get a wide board for learning - surprised they couldn't sail this barn door !

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Bombora-Fun-Freestyle-Windsurfing-Board-6-0-Sport-Sail-/160744483268?pt=AU_Sport_Surfing&hash=item256d1e29c4

Bombora Fun Freestyle (No 05268) Windsurfing Board.

It comes with a 6.0 mtr Sport Sail (No 1205).The board is 3.6 Mtrs in length & 700cms wide @ the widest point. This unit is near new. It has only been used 4 times,as I couldn't get the hang of it.

Just have to laugh when people get their conversions all mixed up... lol

My parents bought me one of those back in about 1984. It was a pretty good board too. Mine was pinkish in colour.

Yep, they was one ugly bitch of a plank.
They made them pink and chalk yellow too, you're right.

They're sort of molded after the original Windsurfer, not sure how license-wise. With a different track and foot strap position. I think they derived the name freestyle from the equivalent, short-lived 1983 Windsurfer namesake with a black encasing. No relation though - the Bambora version was real flat, skinny at the front, and the track was fugly as 2 planks (or whatever the actual expression may be )

The board and rig look like they are in reasonable nic so $150 isn't an unreasonable price. If it was for sale in Sydney I'd consider it.

Is the hull different to a WOD? I always thought they were the same.

+1 I'd say someone could have a lot of fun with it.

I just love how he has rigged the sail to be upright with about 500 metres of rope...oh and the fact he didn't know how to tie the boom on so lets get wifey to hold it up in the shot.

Does look like a better rig than my recently acquired 1978 Mistral Competition.
But then I would lose all those special features-
Sandsurfing ability due to a folding fin,
No footstraps to get in the way,
Impressive sheets of displaced water when "aquaplaning",
Arm conditioning when carried by the conveniently located daggerboard slot,
Core workout and rupture test due to necessary 700 cm between ones feet. (see

)

But then it was probably not improved much by a heat induced rocker mod (all rippley back there).
And even Robbie could not sail it without a centreboard.

150$ Probaly purchased for that price back in the day If you added inflation relative intodays value and subtracted mass production methods the price would be 44534534545453545$

Mate windsurfers cost a lot more than $150 30 years ago to buy a board and rig. In dollar to dollar terms there probably isn't that much difference between the prices charged today and the prices of then. Perhaps it was a bit cheaper as you generally bought a whole package of board and rig. However it was not a cheap sport. Despite this it was massively popular, ie getting 20 people out regularly windsurfing from a town that had about 2000 people.

Dimensions the same, but slight differences. I've raced north american version and sailed a lot those ugly planks as well in Australia - different feel. This one was really flat, with little buoyancy on the nose. You couldn't force a nose curve as you could with the old Windsurfers. Also the finish was very slippery - no grip.

Damn they was ugly...

RRP was exactly $750 (not negotiable then) brand new at the shop near the Spit in 1983, bought one then.

It was a fair amount of money, but many people were mono-board for the longest time, bar the wave jumpers in Wanda. The board itself would last forever, and the 1-design rigs for a few years.

Therefore it was considered inexpensive fun by-the-outing.
Simpler time... as the other thread states...

The rule of thumb is that your money doubles up every 2 years.
So $750 in 1983 years ago would be around $5500-6000 now?

Incidentally. I was in Split in 1983, and was then considering a SH board for around $600, but I found it very expensive, and sadly missed on the sport until 3 years ago.

Too bad you missed out. Never saw it that way. One was young and living right on the water. So me was sailing with mates, and no other expenses, on a basis of about 150 days a year (many crappy ones, I'll concede). Was windier then, from memory. Beer after, good crowd, GFs around or sailing, people enjoyed their old gear then. Resold 3 years later for $250. Borrowed wave sailing gear for Wanda. Overall windsurfing came to pennies an outing.

Now I have 3 boards, 4 sails, 3 booms, etc. Probably the equivalent of $12,000. There are now expenses related to getting to the beach, used gear doesn't sell well, like everyone here it seems I'm pickier with the wind, and guys are so-so fun (the wind's never good enough for their current next-year equipment).

But then again, now more seasoned and I can afford, so no complaints.

Cat Fact No 2:
Another free 78 Mistral IMCO 360 on the footpath yesterday looking for a destitute wood-be monoboarder.
They sail nicely with a modern light wind sail which must be located SLIGHTLY BEHIND HE CENTRE OF THE CENTREBOARD SLOT!
(5 minute install of a Chinook base using heavy duty plasterboard screws) .
The centrboard goes into the bin (if it will fit).
Goes upwind well, bury the rail to pinch up abit more.
