All

One year on, my 'new' board bag plastic zip is starting to stiffen up. Before I know it, it will be cactus, and time to spend $60 on getting a new one put in.

Any tips on maintenance, to get back that silky slide, and prevent terminal failure? Appreciated.

Graphite powder, if you can still get it.

Give the bag a good soak to dissolve any salts on the zip, then when it is dry rub soap on the zipper brfore doing it up.

I saw a post on here a while ago that suggested covering the affected area with brown vinegar every day for about 4 days. I've been meaning to try it myself on one of my stuck zips...

Vinegar helps to dissolve the salts.
CLR works quicker

Once you have cleaned the salt off, Silicon spray (Get it from hardware) works a treat. INOX can be your friend if the salt and rust has gone to far.

I have no idea about prevention, I just wash it once a season with the hose to get most salt out. After a couple of years it jams up so I give it a squirt of WD40 in the slider, get it going with pliers for the first couple of cm and it is good for another couple of years.

By then it is not my bag anymore........

This is what I do as well...Spray it with WD40 and leave it for a few mins so it can eat into the salt.

FYI INOX has salt disolving properties / more suited to salt water environment Lads. Works a treat on boats / motors being smashed by sea water aka Surf rescue applications etc. WD40 works.

my pat love bags are screwed now. The Stix one that I bought in 1994 is still going strong - if a little long and narrow

Any sail maker

If you are remote and no sailmakers around, any place that does

Swags
Caravan annex repairs
Camper trailers
Auto or marine upholstering
Gun bags
and it goes on.....
