Yeah, reading the wind in the capital is 3/4 dark arts and 1/4 desperation. There are only two directions-

NW which is always gusty, as in waving between no-where-near-planing and almost-acceptable.

E where you hold out for a swing late in the day and if you're lucky you might get an hour or two reliable planing wind. If not so lucky, there'll always be someone else there who has come "on a promise" to lament with.

The first is easy enough to pick from the BOM forecast, but the later requires specific local knowledge and an arcane understanding of patterns taking in far more variables than I have been able to fathom. It's a sort of tea-leaves reading I think.

Nah it was never that hard to pick the afternoon easterly, and is by far the best wind in the capital. SE down the coast, hot day with light to medium NW - W blowing in Canberra. Mid afternoon look for a bank of cloud over the hills to the east (over Briadwood) And just check BOM to see when the easterly hits Braidwood, anytime before about 3 and it was usually on.

while trying to not upset anyone-if you live in ACT and expect good windsurfing-well you really need to get out a bit more.
