Suggestions for cheap 2nd hand but good early planing board for lake work.My largest sail is 5.6m but I prefer to use max 5m if possible.Uphaulable ( if I can remember how..).Cant afford one at the moment but maybe if I decide on one & visualise hard enough it will appear
For 67kg odd weight what would be the sort of volume youd need.Dont want a clunker but be nice not to be too tippy.
100lt freestyle wave or freestyle board will be perfect. I have a mate who weighs about the same and he has a 100lt freestyle board which he uses in nearly all wind strengths with a 5.4 as his biggest and a 4.7 as his smallest.
That is on flat water. We don't get any wavesailing haha. and I weigh 75kg and use a 100lt with a 5.8 as my biggest and can get planning and spock in about 10-15 knts. I have used the board in everything up to 4.0 weather and also as a light wind wave board at our wave nats. I have the tabou freestyle which I love.

I think the board I have is about 95 - 100ltres ( 95 Caveman waveboard ).Ive only been using a 5m sail as my 5.6one is an early 90's dead model+ I dont like the extra weight ( mind you that could just be the heavy pink fibreglass 2 piece mast i have to use with it..). So maybe my technique is a problem although my board sinks if you stop & is a struggle /tiring in non planing conditions
so maybe a more recent floaty board would make things easier?
What sort of $ would I need to get something cheap that would do the job?
Massive advantage on your pocket being a light weight since there seem to be heaps of 100lt or less used boards selling cheap. Here are some sites I always keep an eye on. If you're interested get them to send you some pics via email.http://www.boardcrazy.ashop.com.au/c/126300/1/used-windsurf-boards.html

Personally I think you're safe buying anything made after 2000. A lot of the time repairs and superficial cosmetic damage will drop the price a lot, which is great! I personally don't give a crap about the look as long the repairs are sound. After getting some quotes they tell me freight will be usually $70-100. Look for something that looks good then research it like crazy. Read reviews and the official boards website for recommended sail/fin size and style of sailing.
I'm a fan of the Starboard Carve or equivalent like JP X-cite for early planning and versatility with easy gybing, early planing and great chop hopping freeride fun. Usually not that cheap though.
Good luck.
I think kit age plays a big part. People don't realize how much difference newer lighter kit makes to their sailing experience. I am not sure about average price of a newer board in Aus but when I upgrade my 2008 tabou freestyle in 4 months I hope to sell it for about 800 bucks. There are heaps of boards out there and you will find anything to suit your budget. I would try stick with a board from the last 5 years but the newer the better. If you look after it a board is a good investment as you can keep it until you decide you want the newer and better version just like a car.
Cripes Im keen to get a new board..need to win lotto or get off my arse & this forum & paint my B commissions instead of being on the computer!Back to the art!![]()
