Ive just got a set of Mystic adjustable harness lines that velcro on.The problem is my boom is c 90's era and much fatter than modern ones. The velcro doesnt overlap enough to hold them securely.Last sail I had one let go..not much fun..any suggestions? Now I don't trust them.

Not that I have seen Mystic adjustable lines, but are you sure they are held on with velcro, or are they just using velcro to hold them in position on the boom?

All the harness lines that I have seen have a loop that goes around the boom arm and the velcro is only meant to tighten it up and stop it sliding down the boom lengthways. If the velcro wasn't there the lines should still hold you to the boom.

Just out of interest, are the ones you bought on the boardcrazy website? I guess you are up that way, so it's probably where you got them.

Is there a picture of the ones you have?

What diameter is the boom? I don't think booms were much bigger if it all back then.

Boom diameter is 40mm..I just assumed that modern booms were narrower as a few Id seen were.Maybe I'm doing something stupid with the way i have them on..

40mm that's huge! Maybe with a smaller diameter boom your arms wouldn't get tired as soon too?

Wow, I thought 32mm was big. I guess you are right, 40mm must be too big for modern harness lines. I have noticed on some of the harness lines I have that they are a tight fit, and that's on a 32mm boom.

It is still interesting that you can't attach them. From the photo they look like typical lines in that they have a loop that goes around the boom and the velcro should only be for tightening them up. Without it they should still carry your weight no problem.

Oh well, you might have to go get a more modern boom. Not a bad problem to have in the end.

Hi SBC,
I bought some Mystic lines also and even on a 32mm boom the webbing is too short and just hanging on by the velcro.
Cheapest solution would be to unpick the velcro sew on a longerpiece of webbing and resew to velcro back on the new webbing.

I'll have to have a look & get my partner onto that..he's the one thats good with the sewing.. ( mainly cycle panniers etc). Hopefully a standard machine should be able to cope. If the attachments are causing problems with other booms I suppose Mystic could do with some feedback...

Hey Sboardcrazy,

I picked up a good product from a boat chandlery called Velcro - Reusable wrap. Cost $10,yellow backed bubble pack. It allows you to make extensions to velcro straps, or new straps etc. 2 meters of the stuff - bloody useful and strong, cut it to length. You could even sweet talk a sewing machine user to give you a permanent reenforcement to the extension if you were nervous ( I'd be surprised if that was needed ) Hope that helps
