Having had a summer of bugga-all wind, this ANZAC weekend actually looks like is may be windy. About time windy conditions coincide with time-off work! ![]()
Only problem is looks like NW and W winds in NSW. Can anybody recommend good locations that are fun to windsurf in those conditions IN NSW, close to Sydney if possible but not nescessary.
On the north side of Sydney about the only place that works in N or NW is Palm Beach on the Pittwater side. usually gusty too but hey, after the crap weather and wind we have had lately it will be nice to see the sun and some warmish wind for a change.
Canton Beach up the central coast is good for those directions too, but you will need a weed fin.
Not sure of the south side, someone will comment Im sure.
Hope this helps.
Palmy is crap in a westerly. West Head is just too close and the wind is super gusty and all over the place.
I forgot about Kurnell
its a good place to sail a NW.
Foreshore Road on the way to La Perouse. Sailing on the NE side of the runway. You will see all the cars parked on the side of the road. Rigging area is not so good - either on the side of the road or on the sand.
The run is a lot shorter than you get in a NE at Kyemagh, but the water is nice and flat.
Just don't leave the beaten track when walking from the road to the beach, or you could get more then you came for.
Lake Tuggeragh on the Central Coast can be good, on the north side of the bridge at The Entrance. Launch from the carpark at the boat hire/resturant/takeaway. It's about 4km acrosss to the other side of the lake and no major hills so the wind is about as consistent as a westerly can be. There is a channel right at the launch spot and can be a great speed strip as the sand and weed bank on the other side stops all waves, 500m + long. You need a weed fin.
I think Friday is SE so 'll go to Umina (end of barrenjoey rd) also good in SW.
Kurnell is by far the best, the wind has time to become less gusty when it gets there theres also always a few people on the water too (kites and windsurfers).
Has anyone sailed boat harbour (northern most part of cronulla beach) in a westerly? I ve heard it can be quite good there in a westerly and cos you can drive on the beach it would be easy launching! Im thinking of trying it out on monday or even sunday anyone keen?
Yeah call me on on sunday morning Mr Plod and we can give it a crack! I ll try to keep all four wheels on the ground for you!
Do you need a 4wd to drive through the park these days or would you be able to sail down to boat harbour from wanda? Probably a bit sketchy getting back...
It is a reef break? I've sailed over there once on a southerly but got freaked out when I saw rocks beneath the water.
You can drive most of the way by 2wd car but then you have to walk a bit further to get to the beach 4wd is best. PM me your number if your keen to go will go either sunday or monday.
Kurnell definitely a good venue to go to. Cheers for the advice. Was averaging 12 knots when I got there. Put up the 6.9m. then (as the graphs prove) the wind picked up and well, lets face it I was definitely over powered for a while. Time to down-size I thought. Put up my 5.5m about 3pm. Unfortunately my luck wained as the wind dropped too. And moved to a more NNE direction. Infact I've just got home and checked the graphs and sure enough the wind dropped right off about 4pm to 5pm.
Well at least I can recommend Kurnell. It isn't a secret venue, you just need to drive a bit further to get there and be prepared to watch those wind direction and speed changes.
Only one thing... wear boots. Rabs was 'stung' by something small and painful and it drew blood on his foot. Stingray? Weaver Fish? Barracuda?
Mate, NNE shoulda been as good as NW over there?
About the bottom, you're right. Wouldn't trust the ** down there...
I've seen twice this year these two guys at Kyeemagh effectively playing tag on formula gear. Good promotion for formula. They seem to be flying down wind today when everyone else looked to be just-planing or slogging. Huge sails though, looked like 11s. That was about 4pm so not a lot of wind by then. I'd like to try it but think the masts alone with their regular breakages would send me broke.
Could any formula racers out there tell me what the most reliable mast brand is, or is it a case of "if you have to ask you can't afford it"?
Krusty, did anyone get out at Wanda today? (Sunday) I was down the mall mid arvo having lunch and it looked like it would have been pretty good up at Wanda.
I checked out wanda yesterday, lunch time then last around 3 and it was too offshore and fairly light, touching 10knots...
I have no idea what was going on, thought it would be ok after looking at the graphs.
Yep can definitely recommend Kurnell as well in a N / NW. Was good yesterday although gets fairly crowded with kites and watch out for the things on the bottom - had to go to the chemist y'day when I got back as this unknown thing stung the crap out of me. Probably weaver fish so boots prob best advice...
Not sure if anyone sailed wanda but after looking at the graphs I wish i did!!! The swell would have been great too, but I think it may have still been a bit too off shore.
Theres definately something that stings you in the water at kurnell it's happened to me before, hurt like buggery!!
Could barely walk my gear to the car!
Reply to "Nobody"
It was Sam and I out yesterday on Formula gear. I was using an 9.8m with a X6, 75% carbon mast. (Touch wood, but no chance of breaking and cheap).
Really nice days sailing. More like summer than summer if you catch my drift....
Formula is not expensive if you buy right and appreciate how much TOW you get.
The days of sitting on the beach will be a distant memory.
Regards...
Just goes to show that after so much crap weather we get a nice summery day and sailors come out of the woodwork.
Yesterday up at Palmy there were heaps of guys out. In fact more than one guy said it reminded them of years ago when it was a very popular spot and sport.
Everything from old slalom gear up to the latest in wave and freeride gear.
The old tandem even made an apperance ![]()
The only bummer was the forecast, it promised so much but only really delivered in the morning. A top day.
Yeah my wife and I rocked up to Palm Beach Pittwater around 2pm and there were at least 20 to 30 boards around. It was nice to see so many people. It was good to get a bit of sun and soak up the warmth and chat to some people. We headed back to Narrabeen Lake afterwards and it was calm there but there were a few people out and a guy on an old windsurfer (original one) was going quite well.
Palm Beach doesn't seem to be a great spot on a northerly so perhaps going over to the central coast would be better?
Kurnell is also pretty much the best spot when it's W or NW with a southerly on the way, since you can at least sail on the small area on the south side of the point when the southerly kicks in - beats having to drive somewhere else most of the time.
