Got thinking yesterday and started working on a mathematical equation as to determining sail size. Wondered if any one else had done such before ? All sensible responses welcome then we can make a tested formula across all people... all publish it as an iphone application and buy a share house in pozo.....or not.

variables

Surface area of board (length/ width)=SA
Fin size=FS
Sail Size=SS
Wind strenth (kts)= knts
weight (body weight+equipment in mast, sail, boom , universal)= W
Volume= V
experience= E
swell= Sw

Try and use the same abbreviations and see what people come up with.

Been done by a Yank in Florida 'James Douglas'

He also has gone further to add a Fin size and Board size calculator

Look for his link on the left hand column under
"Windsurfing Links"
Sail/board/Fin Calculator

As far as math equation's for windsurfing - It could only ever be a rough guide.

Me reckon an equation to keep the GF happy with my sailing time would be simpler than this (though equally impossible)...

E=mc2

key:
E = Sailing time (hrs)
mc = GF special time (hrs) (special time is movies, dinner, a show etc...)

I think there is too many variables. You need to take boardshape, sailtype, sailor preference( do you like overpowered conditions or just enough power), sailor strength, harnessline length, fintype and so on and so on...

I normally use 1 m2 larger than most others on same boardtype, sailtype and sailorweight, so i think it is hard to make a general formula. You could make one for yourself. But i think that it would be easier just to find out what your preference is.
