A 430 mast with a 5m and a 6.2m-ish sail should sort you out for a while.

Depends on few things. When you say beginner.... have you windsurfed before ever? If not you will be uphauling the sail while you stand on the board, so a 4.0 - 4.5m is about right for an average person. Small chick maybe a 3.5. Big bloke maybe up to a 5.0.

what you use on that board in 15kn after you learn will also depends on lots of things. A person (average build bloke for example) just learning will use 4.5, maybe a 5.0. Once planing you'll want a 6.5 ish. 2 yrs later in the same winds on same board you'll be comfy on an 8.0 and will be really moving.

More info?

I am just learning this wonderful sport as well and use a 5.0 sail that my freind lent me which is big enough for me to handle at the moment. There has not been much wind here lately but I can’t resist getting out on the beautiful ocean even if it just to practice the pulling up of the sail. I have a slightly off topic question, besides freezing my you-know-what’s off I am finding that the ocean is very harsh on my skin and dehydrates it quite horribly. Can anyone recommend a good sunscreen and moisturiser that they use?

Moisturiser - a tube of rehydrating HTFU
Sunscreen - HTFU 30+

Seriously (and please don't take offense to my attempt at humour above) the best (& cheapest) moisturiser is a sorbolene cream that chemists use as their base for all pharmacy prescribed lotions. Its called David Craig and you have to ask to order in a tub. Our twin boys had bad eczmea as babies and it worked a treat.

As for sunscreen any generic brand seems to be as good as the more expensive ones. Good old zinc cream last the longest.

Gestalt,
As I've never tested positive for hair product, or for that matter anything that comes in a tube from the beauty aisle that has the words "por homme" on it, I too am not sure what I'm on about.

There's no better time like now for a moderator. Especially with cheap shots like my previous one.

Hey Turd,

Come round to the estuary this weekend, chances are you'll see some of us mad speedsailors whizzing around. Don't be shy to come up and ask questions, we don't bite... much

If you can find 2 sails that will rig on the same mast, probably a 430 for the size sails you are looking at. I spent the first year learning in 15 knots on a single 5.7 and I am about 75kg.
