So what is your experience with demo gear from your local shop. My experience is

1. demo gear only available on demo days, outside of that you have to pay to hire.
2. you demo wave gear on flat water.
3. only specific brands available for demo

Is it just me or are these unwritten rules unrealistic ie i dont think you will get the right/best setup at the end.

1. Take it out whenever you want.
2. Take the wave board to a surf beach of course.
3. If you break it you pay to have it patched up.

I'd like to have a W/S store under 1000kms away to find out.

Paying for the cost if repair is one thing but personally my experience is that a repair or two can really diminish the resale value of boards.

As far as boards go, I've found the stores in Melbourne to be super accomodating when you want to take one out for a demo.

given the fragile nature of boards those policies aren't unreasonable, you'd still get an idea of whether its what you're looking for. same as for buying skis, bikes etc.

Agreed. The stores here are super. I always get good advice, and everytime I am there they offer me something to try for the weekend.

The only rule I know is - you break you pay. Pretty fair really.

Yeah? In NSW?

For what its worth, I think its a fair way to run a business. You can't have stock sitting around for demo, for free, for whenever anyone wants to use it.

When its windy, everyone would want to use it. When there is no wind, no one would care.

I can imagine demoing gear for free might work in a bigger market, but here it is too small to really make it worthwhile.

I have demoed boards from two local shops, not specific demo boards or specific demo days. One got really snakey with me when I said I didn't want to buy the board after trying it and hating it (never ended up so bruised in my life!).
The other let me borrow a couple of other boards to try.
Guess which one I buy from now?

I think you guys over there have a much larger market, so it makes more sense.

It's funny that the first shop you mention expected you to buy their board, even if your demo of it proved it wasn't the board for you.

Over here, I think WSnS charge you a hire charge but take it off the cost of the board or another board, if you buy it or another one. It sounds fair to me.
