I have a 10cm tear in the middle of a monofilm panel. I've read the threads suggesting mylar tape, but I don't know where I can get some. I live near Coffs Harbour, NSW north coast.

Whitworths marine has it, but they charge $17 minimum freight and the 50m tape is $6.

Where do you get it? What width works best?

Thanks.

i use some stuff called ding tape, its designed to cover up dings on surf boards so you could probably get it from most surf shops, try to round off the edges so theres no hard corners & make sure you give the sail a wash where you apply it, i use isocol rubbing alcohol to clean the area im putting the tape.

Cloth tape works well, just put it on both sides of the sail, and only a few $s.

Go to Bunnings and get some clear Bear tape works just as well for a lot less. I have used this very successfully on old monofilm sails.

Agreed ^^^^

Just use the thickest clear tape you can find at hardware.... there is one that is designed to rip across the tape by itself (no scissors or teeth req'd) and it is about twice as thick as other packing tapes. I think it may be one of 3M's many tapes.
That one is good but any quality one will work

I clean sail with metho and rag, on flat surface obviously, and do both sides.

A 10cm tear with taping will last near on forever.

While ur at it do any really bad creases (little white lines) cos they are where the next rip will come from....

Thanks for the help. I have some incredibly sticky polyester repair tape that should work but I'l try and find something transparent for the sake of appearance. It's a fairly new sail so it's purely a puncture wound, not UV/fatigue degradation or anything like that.

This forum is really a good one. Thanks again.

I've got a sail that I went through doing a quite spectacular catapult. The whole main panel was just about torn out but I hit it with some duct tape (both sides) and it is still going strong 12 months later.

Well I've solved the problem. I got some 3M brand, fibre reinforced, transparent, expensive duct tape. I cleaned the area and applied it and it looks fine after one sail.
