Location is Jaws, Maui.
The footage is from the Billabon Odissey.
Opening scene.

I guess in Hawaiian surf speak that wave must be 12ft.

That was the $66,000 wave - biggest wave for the year $1000 per foot.

BTW Billabong Odyssey was directed by a guy from WA Phil Boston

Just curious, how much time do you have between waves at Jaws? You'd have to time your dive, and escape pretty well?!?

I wondered about that after my surfing mates kept saying it was 3-4ft when the faces where clearly over head high..

Apparently you should measure the height of the wave from behind (out to sea, looking in at the shore), so depending on the conditions, and the shape of the seabed, the conversion between surfing feet and the height of the face is very site specific. (and fairly arbitrary seeing as surfers don't really have anything to compare against)

I much prefer the windsurfing technique of measuring the faces against fairly constant things - head, logo, mast, mast and a half etc.. after all, it's all about the face, and how much water is going to crash down on me and my kit when I stuff the bottom turn.. again!
