friend just bought himself a pair of diving goggles with a built in video, and they work fine on land, he looks daft though

They could be better than a Gopro. I wear prescription glasses though so they wouldn't work for me. The other thing with the Gopro is the mounting options. However more competion, choice and innovation makes us the winners.
I don't know Mike but the GoPro's got more mounting options as in helmet, boom (forward & back) and mast etc.
