I need a new wetsuit.I freeze in my 1990 one. These are on special ( the superceded ones) .Anyone know what they are like? Ill be sailing in c 11 - 12 degree water with 14 - 16 degree air temp ( maybe 8 degree wind chill).
you need a full smooth suit for wind chill, forget double lined unless you are surfing and are in the water the whole time. Probably best to buy from a wetsuit company. Who knows what company made this suit.
Bought a NPX wetsuit a month back, would have to be the most comfortable wetsuit I have ever owned, and keeps me super warm.
i just bought one of the 2/2 short sleeve 2010 FO's that were on special. found steamers were too hot and restrictive for sydney most of the year, though when the winter chilly westerlies hit the 3/2 steamer will be back on. have not worn it in the water yet but on land it felt like one of the most comfy wetties i've worn, better than my ebomb but thats 3/2.
in the shop i tried the 2011 3/2 steamer for sizing, it was a great designed windsurfing steamer. foot cuff locks and over sized arms and stretchy.
so far i'm pretty impressed, for the cost especially.
Used the flux 2010 for surfing and kiting during winter , air temps roughly the same not sure about our water temp .
I have the 2/3 and it is plenty warm enough . Very comfortable wetty that is very durable . Can definitely recommend it .
where are you sailing that the water temp is 11-12, that is seriously cold. you are on lake maquarie?? coastal water temp rarely as low as 15-16 and is normally above 17-18. not sure if the lake is different, does not feel to be when i've been in it.
I have an FO FLUX 3/2 steamer.
Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I know Flying Objects wetsuits are made in the same factory with the same materials as the other surf brands.
The thing with the FO suits is that they are shaped to be more windsurf specific.
Any 3x2 steamer would do for NSW winter surely? Smoothie torso would not hurt though.
But I'd choose Flying Objects as they're aussie and support is really good, or West as the warranty is brilliant (as I have raved about previously when mine needed repair)
Had a sail a few weeks ago when the big Westerlies were blowing, at Canton Beach, Tuggerah Lakes. It was honking 30-40 knots, really gusty and lumpy, but the worst part was the water was absolutely bloody freezing. Once you fell in it was hard to last much longer as the cold drained the strength out of you.
Probably the wind chill had something to do with this, but sailed a few days later at the beach and even though still cold, it was definitely warmer that the lake. Guess being just inland and not having much ocean influence affects the water temp there.
My wetsuit is an old Peak steamer 2/3. Wore 3mm booties, high ankle type and a Gath helmet but once you fell in (which was inevitable) you froze. Almost had no feeling in the hands by the end.
Don't think any wet suit would have stopped the cold that day. Probably gloves would have helped. ![]()
Sue google shark skin they are made at beresfield the dive shop at wickam stocks them I am on my third year with mine have a full suit and a sleevles vest ring the shop before going to make sure they have your size they are better than anything iv tried for sailing
I found this on a wetsuit website..This is what I want to read!http://www.wetsuitmegastore.com/wetsuit/6-wetsuit-temperature-guide-and-chart.html
Thanks. I'm going for a least a 3/4 maybe 4/5mm.No way a 2/3mm would be adequate for me with that water.Doesn't look like they do a 3/4 etc..
4/3 will be more than enough, but you must get a smooth skin not double lined. Even if you get a 6mm double lined suit you will still be cold unless you are fully submerged the whole time. Double lined is for surfing not windsurfing. You need a smoothy to prevent wind chill.
I've bought the 5 4 3 serene..cant wait to try it out.. never thought Id want cold water..LOL's![]()
