gday all, im thinking about getting into the sport, i was wondering whether i should consider kitesurfing. ive been youtubing a fair bit and im a little more drawn to windsurfing. i would just like to get the windsurfing community to pitch in what their thoughts on the two sports are to help me make this crucial decision. thanks hope to see you on the water soon
Done both but the biggest stoke for me was wavesailing. I had fun kiting though but can't afford both sports. Kids will do that to you![]()
hope you asked the same question on the kite surf forum ![]()
comes down to cost, like the donk said, space for storage, and transport
windsurf stuff takes space
i believe that dollar for dollar the sports are similiar
i have been told that kitesurfing is a little "easier"
in real estate they say location, location, location
where you plan to go - wind, waves, setup area , etc all count
lessons for kiting are more available than windsurfing - where i come from as well
if you can try windsurfing - the first try is easier in this sport - in lite winds ![]()
as long as either one gets you on the water with a smile = life is good
on this forum we will be biased towards kitesurfing of course ![]()

According to Wikopedia kitesurfing is akin checkers and windsurfing is akin chess. That is as good an analogy as any.
A guy in QLD died kite surfing last weekend. He was a learner. I think a few kiters have died. I don't think I have seen that a sail boarder has died any time recently.
Piss off troll..
You've posted in every forum to stir up ****.....
Go post up on 4chan if you want to talk junk..
A few years ago when I returned to Aus after a stint in the UK I decided as I could not aford a moth sailing dingy ( just been married ) thought I would give kite surfing a go. It looked fantastic and seemed easer than havng to re-learn gybing ect . However the" just being married "and buying new home really kicked in and it was apparent i couldnt afford a Kite either
. So I went round to my mums house and dusted of the old winsdurfing gear I had circa 1990 and just went sailing with the intention to kite later when housing deposits ect where under control.
Finallly got a couple of Kite lessons and thats when I realised the fundermental differance. Kiteing is wake boarding with a Kite for power . Windsurfing is sailing .
As I want to sail as i have done since I was a kid in a sabot I have stuck with. winsurfing. And loving every minute .
If I had enough money and Time i would own both and a moth and 49er and chuck in a f18 for good measure ![]()

Kitesurfing: more cost-effective, less load space in a car, easier to learn, beach-space intensive, substantially more dangerous than windsurfing (Google hurt kite surfer).
Windsurfing: gear and cost-intensive, high load space in car, harder to learn to turn, less beach space, substantially less injuries than kitesurfing.
Was at Rickett's Point last night and it was a pleasure to watch one of the kiters doing spectacular jumps and being in control whilst high in the air in the 20kt + wind.
Fun factor of both sports is high.
Hi Hjnks,
mate id recomend you try both and see which one you like. Its a personel preference thing and the only persons whose opinion matters is your own.
Good luck! I hope you find the sport you are gonna love!
I start windsurfing at 1973/4, I start kitesurfing something like 15 years ago and quit WS, now I am back to WS and quit KS.
I was a WS and a KS instructor.
I can find a lot of similarity in both and a big different as well.
The guy that mention that WS is sailing and KS is not, he is right.
You can see it even with the people that do each sport.
Most of WS guys knows about the tech behind the gear and all around.
Most of KS guys don't know even how the kite fly or pull, they just Ksurf and does it good.
Try both and do what you like best, I love both.
So Hjnks have you gone back and looked at your other thread? It is up to 4 pages now.
Or has all the bickering in that one prompted you to try again? ![]()
Driving a car without lessons is dangerous. In fact look how many P platers die each year.
Forget all the negative talk about you may die, Sh1t you might die driving to work.
Whichever sport you choose, get proper lessons, and dont go out by yourself until you are fully competent(that is competent not confidant). I am a Kiter and yes have had some dodgy situations thrown upon me with unexpected gusts and all sorts. But I had the proper instruction so I could react to the situation and keep myself alive(thus far).
Its like asking should I like olives. Some people do, some dont, they dont know what you will or wont like. They will just tell you what they like.
Get a lesson in both and see which one appeals to you. End of Story.
