Im trying to work out an ICMS equivalent for the landyacht masts Im making, but am struggling with how the number comes about .
the weight in the middle , etc is easy, but the calculation seems vague.
can anybody help with a good dummies explanation. until I have an idea of an equivalent, I can go shopping for your secondhand masts![]()
Voila www.peterman.dk/mast-imcs-formulas.htm
IMCS (460 cm) formula = (length x length x length) divided by (460squared x mid deflection)
IMCS only refers to how bendy the mast is -- so the 1/4 and 3/4 measurements don't come into it.
If you're measuring a 430cm mast, then the length x length x length = 430 x 430 x 430, no matter how stiff or bendy it is.
The "Bend curve" measurement, however, does take these into account:

(same link as before
)
Are you wanting the ICMS measurement or the Bend curve characteristic?
ICMS for a 430 mast with a mid deflection of 179mm for instance would be
430 (cubed) divided by 460 x 460 x 17.9 which equals an ICMS of 21
Here are some of my own Bend curve characteristics calculations below.
Mast bend curves Middle top bottom Bend curve characteristic
2011 Naish SDM 430 C90% 179mm 135mm (75.4%) 117mm (65.4%) 10 Constant curve
2010 Sunshine 430 C80% 191mm 144mm (75.4%) 118mm (62%) 13.6 Constant Curve Flex top
2007 Severne Redline 460 C100% 191mm 149mm (78%) 118mm (62%) 16 Flex Top
2007 Tushingham 490 C100% 206mm 163mm (79%) 128mm (62%) 17 Flex Top
Bend Curve Categories (www.peterman.dk/mast-imcs-formulas.htm)

7 - 9 Hard Top - Constant Curve
10 - 12 Constant Curve

did the ICMS for my ally 430 that will go on the new yacht. This is my bendier mast . got a result of 30 , the stiffer 460 has a result of 36.8
given the similarity in the upper and lower curves Id call them hard top constant curve.
is this going to match any kind of windsurfer mast available, or am I going to cursed with a big heavy ally mast?
