I didn't say that she had made a great life for herself because she didn't.
I said both Lang and she had made something great, and that 'something great' is a large profitable company which employs hundreds or thousands of people resulting in millions of dollars in tax and royalties paid to the government, both state and federal.

I don't envy her life one bit. It takes a certain type of person to survive that lifestyle and it's not me.
Personally, I would probably have done what most people would have done with that inheritance. I would have taken my umpteen millions and lived the life of Riley on a nice beach somewhere. I would not be employing anybody. I would be paying minimal taxes. I would be paying no royalties. I would not be giving interviews for the amusement of the public.
And what would you or the country get out of it?
Nothing.
Except for a few million dollars more on our imports deficit as I bought my new boats and aeroplanes from overseas.
Happy with that?

Lots of good and reasonable points there pweedas. I know that a lot of people just want more stuff so will put up with the downside of mining but if I had the choice I would vote for

Cheaper housing?
Less traffic
More fish, uncrowded waves empty camping sports
And a "real" future fund , millions of tonnes of ore saved in the ground for future generations

What is often forgotten is many of these people raise the funds for the operation by selling shares (parts of the state and future earnings)to foreign interests

Beer and a prolonged period of abstinence could make it doable. Lots of been and lots of abstinence.

Take the mines back off those pricks and get us the people to run them and channel ALL the profits back into the community. Schools, transport, hospitals, R&D programs, environments programs etc. I'm sick of our mineral wealth ending up in foreign investors trust and hedge funds. The Liberal Party and the hate media should hang it's head in shame.

That would be called Communism comrade and that worked well in the past! Could you imagine giving control of mining to the Govt, nothing would get done as the red tape would keep the stuff in the ground forever. It is only the fact that private enterprise pushes Govt departments that anything gets done. It's called Capitalism and for all it's faults it does get things done and unfortunately it is primarily motivated by greed.

Yes, but becoming less so day-by-day. China's emergence as an economic power is in direct relationship to its relaxation of its rigid communist stance. There are entrepreneurs making money, people owning property, working for incentive. There are now emerging privately owned businesses. Enterprise and innovation is breaking out all over China as their govt relaxes its grip on everything.

Go back 30+ years and give me your report on China. Good ol' Chairman Mao, beloved father, makes poor maligned Adolph look like a kindergarten kid. Figures in the order of 80,000,000 of his own people "put down".

Their health service is great if you want a sticky plaster on a wart or something simple.

Brazil also has direct interest in their petroleum industry that is part of there current economic rise.

Why cant we retain more of the wealth created by digging up our ground. We only get one chance to do it.
