Ive got a 04 SS 5.7 Commodore 6 speed manual.
Can you run straight avgas in a injected motor? And if you cant what can you use?
When we used to do alot of racing and with older cars you dont have to worry too much about fuel, it was just advance the timing a bit and maybe a jet change but that was rare.
Some sites say it has lead in it and if it has I cant use it in my car.
Any help out there, anyone a fuel specalist?
Yes it is very heavily leaded. I once heard it was about 30x the lead of old standard leaded petrol, dunno how true that is. But you can see it, when we used to refuel rally cars you'd have white powder on your hands after the fuel evaporated off. Nice ![]()
Thus, it will stuff up your catalytic converter in no time. However that is the only issue so if you have no cat (naughty naughty) then it will be fine.
You won't find much of an improvement as the car can only use about as much ignition advance as will suit normal premium so the extra octane is 'wasted' unless you have more compression or advance the timing even more.
Easy solution is to add toluene as an octane booster. I can't remember the amounts but up to 10% is fine from memory. Google the amount to use - you should be able to find 5% = 3 octane points or something.
Then premium plus about 5L of toluene in your tank will make almost an avgas kinda level and it is not leaded.
I used to buy 20L drums of toluene from the Shell distibutor in Spearwood - can't recall the name - and it was about $30 a drum. So you got twice as much octane increase as the little poxy bottles in the servo, for about half the price.
Oh yea I forgot about toluene, that could work I will suss it out.
The car is stock no mods at all at this stage so it will be interesting to see if it makes a difference ![]()

25 G for mine would be more than a little ambitious.
I had to let my very original white 85 XF S Pac, 4.1 auto, rust proofed from day one and totally immaculate for $2,100. Reckon I tore up about $800, but it was either that or tear up more.
The only one that would be worth anything near 25 G would be one of these, but it would have to be red over silver and manual.

"I can't hear you bro, my subwoofer is totally fully too sick to hear you bro, lets just drive around for the next few hours totally not talking to each other, just each being secretly nauseated by the doof doof of the fully sick and sickening distortion of the fully sick subwoofer bro"
"maybe we can pick up chicks who dropped out of highschool at fourteen and have zero aspirations for their future bro, and they won't care we have small members cause our subwoofers are fully sick and we can run 11's bro... 11's..."
fuel change is a bad idea.
plane and simple.
your LS1 computer is able to be re-mapped really eaily (refer to LS1 edit) not that i condone doing it yourself.
bolt on a set of Tri-Y extractors, optional high flow cats, 2 1/2 " cat back exhaust
get the intake changed to an OTR, get a mild cam (because you sound like your willing to blow money) and a re-map
hello 300+ kw at the rears
put on some descent slotted disks and get some reasonable pads.
stiffer springs and chuck in some pedders reds.
braided brake lines and a power steering cooler.
ready to rock :D
if you put the thing on the track, the power steering will get really hot and will not operate correctly until it cools down.
it's a known mod on the LS1 forum
oh there is also a pretty wicked head and cam combo up for sale at the moment (not mine) for $2400
if i had money to burn i'd grab that too :D
