Stopped at Indian takeaway, bought 3 vegetarian spring rolls. Less than hour later had a bad headache.

Then remembered my friend,a fellow theorist, stopped shopping there after getting a bad headche right after eating there.

Quizzed the owner and they do cook with GM canola oil, probably cause it's the cheapest. She seemed unconcerned when i told her canola oil is GM and therefor poisonous.

They should stop poisoning the customers with this franken food, use olive oil instead.

Is it the canola oil or MSG that is the cause of the headaches?

So, you told someone running a perfectly legitimate business, using perfectly legal products that they are poisoning their customers???
You may find yourself skating on very thin ice there Peter.

It is quite probable that you are either having a reaction to the oil or MSG, but the responsibility lies with you to establish whether you have any allergies and choose your own food accordingly.

Self responsibility is obviously not strong in you.

Or dehydrated. Or tired. Or too much sun. Or short on sleep. Or a crook neck. Or stressed. Or any of the other hundred reasons for a headache.

Perhaps they used water with fluoride in it ?

Seriously, when I go to a chinese restaurant, I always ask for plenty'o MSG. Gives them chuckles...

can you even deep fry stuff with olive oil? i thought it would just fill the kitchen with smoke

Is it only GM canola oil that is poisonous, or is non-gm canola oil also poisonous?

Why do you give PM33 such a hard time ?

I usually get headaches after Indian takeaways as well. And also after kebabs. And always after greasy burgers.

I wake up the following morning with a stinking headache. It usually takes me a bit to work out why I have a headache - I always seem to go through the same process :

where am I ?
why does my head hurt ?
was it the four pints of Stella I had ?
was it the 3 shooters I had ?
was it the next 3 pints od Stella I had ?
was it that girls large boyfriend ?
was it those two bouncers I called Chimp and Gorilla ?
was it the food from that roadside van, cooked by somebody who looked like the less well kept brother of Grizzly Adams ?
was it when I dropped my kebab in the gutter and picked it up again ?

no - thats right - it was the GM canola oil

More likely to be caused by MSG rather than the oil, but you knew that already right?

being a bit serious now.

There could be some truth in the side effects of canola oil stories.
A few years ago I did some research about canola, one of several studies we read was called something like "a hidden history of canola"
Canola is not a natural oil- it is a cross breed-hybrid-GM or whatever development of Rapeseed (IIRC its also known as mustard seed?)
Rapeseed produces very high quality lubricating oil for industrial steam engines, and was also used for lamp oil for centuries - but has high acid levels, and trace elements of the same toxic stuff you find in mustard gas, and several other nasties.
Sometime after WW2 the Canadians were stuck with a glut of rapeseed production and developed the cross breeding/hybrid/GM thingy and combined it with new refining systems to drop the level of nasties in Rapeseed and gave it a catchy new name
"CANOLA", again IIRC, this is from CANadian Oil Low Acid.
The main reason they went to all this trouble is that there was not enough olive oil to go around- and a glut of rapeseed, olive oil is expensive, rapeseed oil is dirt cheap in comparison.

I think it is possible that that every now and then a dodgy batch of Canola slips through quality control, with elevated levels of acid or other nasties.
A small dose of mustard gas type toxins would be a good reason to feel like s**t!

I agree. I suspect that you could deep fry with it, but I think it burns at a lower temperature than other oils.

I find somethings cook at too high a temperature, so spraying with olive oil just ends up burning the oil straightaway, so you get a burnt oil taste.

I also thought the GM part of these types of plants was done to give them a resistance to "round-up", so that they could spray the fields with it to kill off the weeds and leave the target plant in place.

I suspect that some people are just allergic to Canola. GM or no GM.

You might have an iron deficiency, eat some meat..

I wouldnt fry in just olive oil it burns or has a smoke point of around 180 degrees C, which is too low to fry at. Canola / sunflower and most nut oils have a much higher burn point.

FFS Peter you're a whining little Biatch aren't you, I honestly don't know how you can cope with the world being the way it is.

I'm allergic to chocolate which gives me migraines within 30min.

Nothing. It is found in lots of foods naturally and there was a really good test that shows people who claim MSG makes them feel all kinds of ill, also felt the same effects after eating Chinese with no MSG in it.
Another thing that has been demonised for no good reason really.

To sort of stick to topic. I find that sometimes I buy an Indian or Thai curry, and they make me feel lethargic or block up my sinuses.

I can't figure out what they are using that I react to, but I'd love to know.

I cook the same curries myself, and no problem ever. Plus they taste better!

I know what you mean, but not my curries! Sometimes you get curries where they just throw in heaps of chilli to get over the lack of taste. I think that's a sign that you are about to eat something less than special, and it will probably come back on you real soon

The local take-away seems to be trying this approach, and I think he is wondering why he is losing customers.

Yeah I understand that. Restaurants who put heaps of chilli in to appease the masochists: If you can't tell if it is chicken or beef, cos it is nothing but burning, then that is not a quality meal !!!

Now, I do think PM33 may be onto something. I wanted to test his theory so I just drank a glass of canola oil and I feel terrible. It must be that canola oil is bad for us!!!

Conola oil, aptly named. Fertility is reduced with all franken food. Just another step in the right direction for the 500 million goal.
