The site was all internal.
Before making it, I posted on a general (internal) forum asking if anyone had made a scraper... nobody said they had, so I posted that I'd be making one.
Then a couple asked to be notified of the development.
I first made a small PowerShell script that made HTML pages... and shared that, then made it populate a website, and made that generally available.
General Managers (just below directors), used the site bcos the other one was crap, and on the day product X3 became available a GM came to my desk and said, hey I got one of those X3.
-They claim a breach Code of conduct for using company resources for non business activities. (Anyone browsing an external website would be in breach)
-Duty of fidelity and good faith...personal gain. (whatever that means)
-Acceptable User Policy by coping copy write material. (Anyone ever post an image or article here???)
They could have given me a written warning, instead I got immediate termination with no notice.
I'm done being an employee... too much politics, people trying to make you look bad or cut in to your area... too much who do you know, not what you know.
Consultants/contractors get more respect.
And you all know some companies have a management sickness (something just not right) that isn't immediately visible until you've been there a while.
Email from a friend:
Thats retarded man! There were already a few managers making great benefit out of your system! You were providing a feature for a system that is lacking. You were fixing the stupid store. OMG that sucks arse dude!
I'm so sorry that you got fired. My god. I'm going to start looking for another job now. These guys are just evil.
Regardless - I'd leave it and move on. The only thing you should push for is a reference. You may need one of those senior guys to write it themselves.
Sounds like you were working in a BIG company.
I've found that as the number of employees grows in a company, the more likely there are to be people in a position of power who don't really deserve to be there. And since they have a lot of power, they feel threatened if someone else comes along who demonstrates better skills.
This manifests itself in policies and politics, both of which make people like you feel frustrated when you know that there are better ways of doing things.
I've been in a BIG company like that, and now I wouldn't work for any company with more than 30 employees again...
Pick a company of around a dozen staff to send your resume to. They will value your skills, and you can guarantee that there won't be any deadwood in a small co. like that.
Heh Flysurfer,
Having been sacked before, the worst part is you are made to feel almost "criminal like" as you leave and quite often the reason that you are sacked is because of the inefficiency of the systems of that Company, the lack of acknowledgment of such and that you are 'Painted' to be totally inadequate and at fault amongst your peers without a right of reply.
Having said that, the sooner one realizes that we are not useless pieces of discarded flotsam the better, we have much to contribute,we are fellow humans. Its a vindictive world. So far as leaving the conformity of other people's or Companies standards which are often set by people you wouldn't necessarily piss on in a fire. Its the Corporate world that revolves around the ladder system whereby they often delight to see people fall so as to make the next lemming shine out in a world sadly defficient in morals and ethics.
I am proudly unemployable in that world.
I have a number of mates who have similiar stories all around mid age, often leaving with macho bravado about no worries I will get a job, no worries, it is hard out there to get a job and staying positive without suffering from self doubt or even depression. One mate I went walking with this morning is still unemployed after 15 months, from a highly paid exec to having now to sell his house and make changes, difficult as they are, but he didn't make those adjustments to expenditure necessary along the way.
Take control over your life and destiny, don't let the turkeys get you down, I heard a great line the other day... it will be alright in the end, if its not alright you are not at the end.... go surfing keep the endorphins happy
Was your boss a windsurfer? We had to let a kiter go, kept coming to work with his boardies over his suit
.
Recall you bragging you make 6 figures for little effort, maybe discretion was lacking at work as well and they were after any legal excuse. Have you considered politics, they earn make big dollars and do little, just need to learn to say "no comment ".
It's all learning, you'll bounce back better than before.
@ockanui: I'm not sure if that made me feel better, but thanks.
@Mr. No-one: I'm not so bad in person... have you seen "Mr Nobody (2009)"?
Sounds really unfair.
If it were me, I'd get a bottle of zero or round up and write cock sucker on the guys lawn.
I wouldn't really - I just wanted to write cock sucker.
I put in about 15 years as a consultant/contractor. Trust me, they don't get more respect than employees. In most places that's not even close. They do get more money though.
Here's something that'll give you a chuckle, o fired one.
Many years ago a workmate of mine got fired, the legal and warned way. Large computer company in Sydney.
I somewhat suspect he wasn't happy, because of what happened next.
He had to return his company car. So he decided to park right in front of 123 Kent St., Sydney Harbour side. Stopped there, blocked a lane I think. Locked the doors, triggered anti-theft.
On top of the car was painted "SI fellates FM". (S was a female workmate, Frank was the boss who'd fired him - name and address withheld).
It made the news at the time... everyone could see the writing from the 12th floor.
What a riot !! Still remember the boss' face, looking down at the car, he was livid.
I'm good, I got a short contract this arvo... said I'd start next Monday, to give me time for the ABN + Co.
Didn't even need to cut my hair (to look semi respectable).
Freakin NSW requires that you fill in a stupid paper form and mail/hand it in to reg a company name... how lame is that... from the 28th it'll be run by ASIC.
And every single domain I try and register is taken by GoDaddy or CSC or one of those other parasite campers.
Happy days folks.
