Heavy Handed or Justifed?
Obviously they were apprehending a violent criminal, accused of armed robbery.
The bloke was obviously armed (Knife/Gun) and was resisting.
I am all for the flat foots using force to protect themselves and the public
But was 5 bullets necessary to stop the bloke

Police are people too.
If an armed robber is coming at me with a weapon and I have a pistol, I doubt I'd be thinking about trying to use 'reasonable force'

only 5?
If the crim was up on drugs like meth or speed you would most likely need that many to just slow him down- let alone stop him.

Police training is to aim for "centre of mass" not fancy hollywood stuff like picking which eye.
Centre shots mean a bigger target for a stressed out officer and therefore less potential misses that might hit a bystander ,the officer on the spot doesnt have the luxury of time to make what we would consider a well balanced or even handed decision. He has to act and act fast. damned if he does- damned if he dont.

Unfortunately- these centre of mass snap shots are not guaranteed to drop a hyped up druggie, or someone full of adrenalin.

A head shot- in the right spot will switch off the motors instantly- dropping the target like the proverbial bag of spuds, but to be that good takes a lot more training and dedication than most police officers will ever be able to get.
There is also a very good chance that a head shot will go through the skull with enough residual force to kill anyone behind. A miss will be even worse as it will have full velocity.

Instead of jumping on the brutal police bandwagon- let the coroner do his bit.

Not sure if anyone is jumping on the "Police Brutality" bandwagon just yet as there are probably only a few people at most who know whats happened.

However its come at a bad time for the NSW Police Force. At least we live in a country where these sorts of incidents are headline news. Having lived and travelled in a few states I think NSW police are overall pretty good. Australian police in general are heaps better than police in places like America. Police over there can be quite scary.

My guess is the fifth one was needed because the the first four didn't stop the prick.

Years ago in the USA, a bloke took 31 rounds of 9mm and, some of those were in the head. He was still coming at the coppers in his drug fueled rage.

It is not like the movies.

just look at it like this, if your one of the many law abiding citizens then you have nothing to worry about, but if you break the law dont bitch when you get tasered or shot you obviously did something for the cops to resort to that

I have no problem with a cop blugging some lead into someone when they are in real danger. my problem is taser use. initially they were brought out as a less deadly alternative to using your gun. that is not how they are used however. they pull them out whenever they fell like it when thing get a bit hard to handle or when some one is doing the bolt, you don't just shoot some one running away from you, with some potentially deadly effects.

This guy maybe was running away, but probably only to cause more mayhem. He had already stolen 2 cars at knifepoint, carried out an armed robbery, broken into a house and who knows what else. He had a lengthy police record. I would prefer he was stopped instead of running away and commiting all sorts of offences.

sure, every situation has to be assessed and appropriate action taken.

mostly i commend the cops for there job. seen first hand some awesome action taken to stop a bloke in a stolen car. he almost took me out on my pushie. the cops rammed him jumped out with canons drawn as he drove at them and some how didn't fill the bastard with lead. they got him out and appropriatly smashed him. i went to the station and gave them my praise.

what i do have a problem with is tasers being used for very minor issues, when they are not meabt to be.
A taser is to be used in replacement of a gun not an easy way to deal with a drunk.

Carjacking with a weapon, robbery are not mistakes.
They are crimes that you would not like perpetrated
on your loved ones.Drugs are the major cause, but
these crimes are outragious and wrong, far from mistakes.

Right they should not be issued with tasers, few months ago when the "poor innocent" guy that was shot 40 times in the locker with a taser had been shot with a 9mm bullet he would not have been able to get so much sympathy from the bleeding heart judge that released him as a victim and not then be able to got on a rampage in a stolen car, assault a dozen ppl and raid a petrol station!
Amen!

Yeah he was just on a bad trip after a 3 day drug bender and couldn't be stopped by 6 police... For a start

Read the news boys, if your going to comment on NSW news event maybe read a paper that actually has details. Try the Sydney morning herald and stay away from News.com and the terrorgraph.. been heaps of inaccurate Shiz on here in the last few days. But never let the truth get in the way of a good story or support of an opinion....

yeah it was in the herald i read it but an early edition before every thing had benn revealed.

there are many many cases of incorrect taser use.

Edit

Looks like I was quoted above... Early edition. It was 2 weeks ago, you can read follow up stories as more details are revealed but wasn't really aimed at you anyway.

But Yeah tasers are nasty, I have seen them used and they aren't pretty, the guy probably didn't deserve it either but got 2 full hits to make sure he got the message. He didn't.

Best thing was the cop missed hitting him the first time so had to reload and shoot again, the whole time none of the 4 cops standing around did anything, I guess it took 30 seconds, old mate just kept going so they reloaded and shot him with it. He got up and kept going so they booted him again. He went down, then got up and got in the wagon. Night over. Must say I've seen cops and bouncers punch people one hit out and it much scarier

That sounds like an issue with the court system??

cops are not there to just execute people in our sociaty as they see fit?

don't put words in my mouth i never said the, RIGHT to make them. everone should pay the appropriate price for the crimes they commit.

there is a time and place for them,

like the mentally disabled man who was stubbing himself would would of been better off with a taser to back than a bullet. oh well at least he didn't get the opportunity to go and commit more nasty crimes against our loved.

Agreed and that's it, whatever the cop does someone will always say the should have taken one step down the force scale but the are humans put in some scary situations and **** happens.. Sad but true.

And the read a paper comment wasn't aimed in your direction at all.

actually saw that last one on australian story and trully believe the police officer just made an accident. the fact the police departmant never actually accept this is what is annoying.
