"Officer, officer, we're about to do something highly legal but completely dangerous. You should watch."
Not big, not clever, but f*ckin' funny. (Starts at 15 seconds)
I've never understood the hate directed towards cyclists.
I went to an AFL game some years ago and thought the same thing when people were yelling insults and getting visibly upset at the opposition! I thought what the hell? are you people normal in the head? I think I know the answer.
cycling is good
its great for your heart and mental well being (which means that you are then nice to people - even on seabreeze)
there is a 74 % chance that its good for the environment
You aren't hauling 1.5 tons of metal around with you just to go to the shops
Most drivers are pretty cool but have had half eaten maccas chucked at me for no reason. There is def a bad culture on the roads here in perth -you dont need to be on a bike to see it - you see it as a driver.
Hoons + 4wds hogging the right hand lane 15 kmh below the speed limit = cars zig zagging everywhere
Love my car too -its great for road trips its a big old vs II Commodore wagon ( 2 bikes fit in it nicely) - but try and get on the bike whenever possible
loved the initial movie by the way - that beer guzzling barney at the start was classic
"dude - you dont even know ! want a beer ? - here you go - dont tell anybody!"
As a keen recreational cyclist I agree with GreenPat and Poor Relative...
After three (3) accidents involving cars that resulted in trips to casualty and time in hospital, I now keep to the cycle paths and/or surburban roads...
The clip was amazing - but the guy was a dickhead with no forethought for the safety of himself or others. He even admits to being a long term dickhead...
^^^
Well it seems he almost went out knowing he was likely to 'skittle' a cyclist... and didn't seem to surprised or upset when he did.
And although I didn't watch the whole thing, there were sections where one of them didn't even have a shirt on, and one (at least) with no shoes...
My wife's a nurse who specialises in wound care/management - much of it resulting from accidents (others cancers and other surgeries) - and she can be very descriptive over the types of injuries she sees and treats and the long term impact... at 70kph the bloke without a shirt is going to loose a serious amount of skin if he comes off badly...
...and then maybe I'm just starting to get old and sensible. I carry plenty of scars from doing stupid things in my teens and 20's... even my early 30's.
Nah, you're right. That's what I meant, they are reckless but also have some strict safety rules.
Insisting on wearing a helmet is good, but then they go and miss an oncoming truck by inches. Mental.
as a downhill skater i can say that is not a normal occurrence! haha the australian community is incredibly safety conscious to the degree at which the senior riders in each city regulate the hills that people skate to ensure that people are skating within their limits!
in aus we have a much harder time than cyclists because we are legally not aloud to ride roads with a marked dividing line or medium strip or any road with a speed limit of over 50 (essentially all the decent safe roads).
in SA we have a real problem because we essentially do not have anywhere legal to skate and people who don't understand the sport don't even bother trying to understand the sport and are pretty much calling for an outright ban!
we don't wanna skate illegally we just don't have a choice! haha
sorry for the rant! the sport just means allot to me!
I love riding my bike. But hands down Perth is a crap place to be a cyclist. Other cities like Canberra beat it hands down for dedicated cycle paths which link suburbs Unis and the CBD.
After many near misses with very ignorant and rude drivers, I now only take mine out onto the cycle path down the river. Not worth getting knocked over and getting killed.
